Our Story

On March 23, 1993, Bill Carty, Tyson Willson, Jim & Ann Gray, along with 14 community leaders gathered to discuss the needs of Carpinteria Unified School District (CUSD) and set in motion a relationship that continues to thrive today. They created a non-profit for the purpose of advancing education in the district, and Carpinteria Education Foundation (CEF) was born!

CEF set out to solicit financial gifts from the private sector to support STEM programs in Carpinteria public schools. The Foundation planned charitable events, such as Carp-a-Cabana. Since inception, CEF has raised over $4,000,000 to supplement Federal, State and Local tax means.

The founding members legacy continues on in the work of the current Board of Directors. Our current board is made up of retired educators, second and third generation Carpinterians, CHS alumni, and many parents of students currently attending Carpinteria schools.

Pam Werner

Executive Director

Pam has served as the Administrator since 2017, and was recently named Executive Director. Pam oversees the Foundation's day-to-day operations and serves as the point of contact for volunteers and the community at large, manages communications and marketing, and promotes community awareness of the Carpinteria Education Foundation and its importance to the Carpinteria Unified School District. With the support of the board of directors, Pam leads fundraising events such as Carp-a-Cabana and just recently, Movies in the Park.

Pam and her husband, Brian, have three children. Celeste is working toward her single-subject teaching credential at UCSB. Ben and Moses will both attend Carpinteria High School this fall.

Pam is passionate about furthering the Foundation’s mission to promote excellence in education. She has over 10 years of experience working in an administrative capacity within public school districts.

Sally Green

Secretary

Sally was born in Northern California, but grew up in Los Angeles where she attended UCLA, and began teaching in LAUSD in 1967. She and her husband, Roger moved to Carpinteria in 1993. She was Principal at Canalino School for 9 years before retiring in 2010.

She has three daughters, the oldest lives in Washington State, middle daughter lives in Carpinteria, and her youngest in Ojai. She has three wonderful sons-in-law. Her two grandchildren live in Carpinteria, and attend Carpinteria Middle School, and Carpinteria High School.

Sally sits on several non-profit boards including CEF, of which she has been a member for 20+ years, the THRIVE Executive Board , Fighting Back Mentor Program Task Force, the Kinderkirk and All Saints by the Sea Parish School Boards, and is a docent at Casa del Herrero. She also served Carpinteria on the Board of Trustees at Santa Barbara City College, and sat on the Citizens Oversite Bond Committee for 4 years. Sally is currently serving on the Carpinteria Unified School District Board of Trustees.

Janie has lived in Carpinteria for 35 years. Her daughter graduated from Carpinteria High School, and continues her studies at UCSB. She is the owner of A-1 Fingerprinting in addition to her role at Santa Barbara Fish Market.

Janie is a big part of what makes our annual Carp-a-Cabana Auction a success. She is also a member of the Family Service Agency board.
