THE SABBATH By Abraham Joshua Heschel
Judaism is a religion that focuses on the attachment of time to sacred events unlike technical civilization, space and time have an equal meaning within life. Sabbath in meaning is to celebrate eternal time 1/7 days while 6/7 days are used to stay within the realm of space. Carpe diem rests within the concept of Sabbath due to the meaning one “six days shall be labor, and the seventh day is sabbath to the lord”. This allows people to focus on the aspects of their daily lives and complete important tasks within a timely period before dedicating a day to spiritual reflection. Although Carpe diem has similarities to Sabbath, carpe diem still derives from a broad concept “seize the moment” which can be used in bad concept.
Hedonism
The Islamic concept of hedonism is the understanding that “pleasure is the only way to achieve happiness in the world”. The article “Islamic Views on Hedonism Among Students” by Hasri Fendi conveys conceptual research based on the Indonesian students viewpoints on hedonism against the teachings of Islam. The author conveys that hedonism has negative influences on students due to criminal acts and promiscuity deeds. Hedonism is from the Greek word “Hedonism” which the root word “hedone” means pleasure. Those that practice hedonism believe that all action that is taken must lead to pleasure. Hedonism can be described as good or bad depending on the context that it is used in. There are 2 types of characteristics that hedonism can be portrayed as, “Egotistical Hedonism”, and “Universal Hedonism”. Egotistical hedonism is the aim “to get maximum pleasures that can be enjoyed for long periods of time”, which can be extremely unhealthy depending on the circumstances. Spiritual pleasure is derived from “feeling, emotion, and mental vibration” and is used in music. Negative views on hedonism can consist of Discrimination, crime, individualism, Idling time, compulsive buying, and wasting money. The original Islamic view of hedonism focuses more on the achieving the current goals and acquiring the reward of pleasure in a long-term life. Over the years the view on hedonism became used with negativity which insults the Islamic culture.
