The Battle is but the Beginning…
Hi, I’m Caro. And since joining the world of online story competitions in 2023, I’ve read a LOT of short fiction.
I started with a full-blown Debrief addiction that lasted YEARS, and have since become a preliminary judge for Elegant Literature and a first reader for Flash Fiction Online. As such— though I am always learning—I have developed a sense for what publications are looking for.
A member of two writing groups, I have done countless beta. I am honoured to know many accomplished writers in the online space, and have been thrilled to see stories I worked on win big prizes.
The old wisdom holds true: to be a writer, one has to first be a reader. I’ve read enough to know what works. To know when a trope is tired. To know when a twist is anything but.

Competition stories—no matter how much we polish and preen before deadline—are never final stories. Stories need time—to percolate, to develop, to truly shine.
To illustrate: in 2025, I set a goal. Take one competition story every month. Revisit, revise, submit. By allowing characters and ideas space to breathe, I succeeded in receiving four publications and three honourable mentions in Elegant Literature in the space of only nine months.

I love being a part of the world of words and enjoy nothing better than time spent with writers. My work has been published in Elegant Lit, Kudu, Ratbag and elsewhere. I am currently exploring ideas for a novel, and still entering way too many contests.

It's a workshopping activity! Send me your story (erasmus.caro@gmail.com), and I'll dissect it. I'll celebrate what works and point out areas for expansion, improvement and cuts. I believe that kind, supportive feedback is the best way for any writer to grow.
