My name is Carolyn Engelhardt, I'm a Postdoctoral Research and Teaching Associate at the University of Georgia. I completed my PhD. at the University at Buffalo in May 2025 studying under Çağatay Kutluhan.
Lately, I've been working on two projects:
one with Román Aranda, Nobutaka Asano, and Hironobu Naoe in which we've defined an L-type invariant for knotted surfaces using shadow diagrams and are investigating its consequence and properties. The other project is with Hong Chang, Seth Hovland, Porfi Rodriguez, and Greg Vinal under the supervision of William Menasco. This project focuses on rectangular diagrams for knots and unknotting algorithms.
Broadly, my research interests include knot theory, 4-dimensional topology, and knotted surfaces.
Here is my CV (last updated August 2025)
