Peer Mentoring Initiative:

Following a period of cultural instability during summer of 2020, conversations of diversity, equity and inclusion were brought to the forefront of academia. The graduate student response at IU was twofold: first, to demand our department to make systematic changes regarding their history of inequity towards marginalized groups. Second, in recognizing administrations cannot act in certain capacities, we formed a Peer Mentoring Initiative, where more experienced graduate students can help get new students comfortable in the department.

As graduate students are, well, graduating, the PMI is in constant need of more graduate mentors. If you would like to get involved, please visit the PMI website or email me or Julia Plavnik.

If you are a prospective, incoming, or current graduate student, feel welcome to reach out to discuss the culture, logistics, or any other needs for getting settled in Bloomington, beginning research or teaching, or graduating with a concrete plan.

Past events the PMI has conducted include:

  • A very IU Math Thanksgiving

  • Various social events

  • A series of career panels for getting post-docs, liberal arts jobs, or industry careers/internships.

We are planning more career and social events come the fall, so please get involved!!!!

I am the current graduate student representative on IU Math's diversity and inclusion team.
