Bittersweet mood, Tarot cards and rust. Those were the first three things we talked about when planning the promo with the guys. Beautiful song & a great great album, even better than their debut imo.[4]

I think the video dealt with the heart of the lyrics. Sometimes you have things that don't seem important to you before they're gone, and when they start walking away and you realize it, it's too late or physically impossible to get them back. The funny thing is that the song deals with love, whereas in the video the setting is a platonic love affair between two challenged characters that have one crucial difference to the others around them. They're able to see how sick the world is around them and are poisoned by it. The inspiration to the whole setting just came from something that Marko said to me in one of our brainstorming sessions. When I asked him why would he make songs about larger tragedies of the world when everything seems fairly alright in Finland, he told me to turn on the tv and the news to see how sick the world was around us.[5]

Rust: I tend to overlook it on Carnival ships, but sometimes the balconies have lots of it, and when in port next to another cruise line, the Carnival rust and hull patchy paint smears really stands out. I've heard that Carnival's official reason was a poor choice of cheap marine paint, compounded by the daily wear & tear on the ship's metal in a salt water environment. But other lines don't seem to have as prevelant a rust issue as Carnival.

So, in all this time that the ships are idle, is Carnival doing spruce up work on them? I don't mean dry dock, just enhanced maintenance to improve the ship board appearance? This could include carpet cleaning, furniture repair or replacement, cigarette smoke mitigation and yes, rust elimination?

Or is Carnival just biding time waiting for passengers to return and it'll be business as usual? Can the company continue to do sub par maintenance and figure passengers will just be happy to be back aboard a ship again? In my 40 plus Carnival cruises, I've always seen workers chipping rust off and repainting, but the end result seems to be the same amount of rust.

Rust is going to happen. Salt and water are very corrosive. I tend not to look for faults while on vacation and just enjoy. I haven't been on a cruise, but if I was sitting on a balcony, looking and listening to the ocean, the last thing I would want to be doing in serenity is "wow, look at that screw and bracket it's rusty".

Most likely. And it will not concern only the Carnival ships. I mean, just imagine how many ships were not operating. Its been so long. These ships rusted both outside and inside. Those companies will have to spend lots of money to get them ready for a cruise

Norwegian ships have rust too, FWIW. Not that they're really higher class than Carnival. Salt water and metal generally have an unhealthy relationship. I've not yet been on a ship where they weren't always painting something though.

I overlook a bit of rust, but what gets on my nerves a little is messy painting. I am a person who has done a lot of painting in my life. I notice when the blue paint is slopped onto the white paint or white onto the blue. Or paint on the wood railings. And especially drips on the balcony floors. I try not to look, but I find myself wanting to fix the slopped paint and remove the drips. I don't know. I don't paint like that. The paint that they use must be very hard to apply neatly or they have cheap brushes. Or they don't care or something.

I would like to talk about the title before starting the analysis. The song is titled Carnival of Rust. A carnival is a celebration and place of joy. A carnival is organized when a festival is near or to celebrate a grand occasion. It is a symbol of victory of good over evil and a spirit of togetherness all over the world, be it the Carnival of Rio, The Citgus carnival of Spain, Ivrea carnival of Italy or Janmashtmi / Dussehra carnival of India.

However, the song here takes a very ironic and shocking turn when it talks about Carnival of Rust. Rust forms on metal and it makes it useless or at least destroys it to a large extent. This title is celebrating the destruction and the demolition caused by the Rust that has grown in everyone. It shows a dystopian world where people are not what they appear. They are hidden under masks, body paints, or costumes. The first shot of the song is the picture of the gate of the carnival. It is lifeless and dull. There is not much light. It is dark, literally and metaphorically. There are lights all around but the gate seems like an entrance to a haunted house. Do notice the visual effects and how the camera pans to the gate. You are going to the gate in a twisty tipsy ride. It is not a simple journey. It has some twisted realities that you are going to witness.

These lines show how she is getting lured to the game and the game of bullfighting starts. The Matador ( the game owner) is instigating her to come and try her luck in the game. The carnival has some other people too. A pair of violinists busy play music, a couple sitting on a long table playing with fire. ( Notice how the table signifies distance while the closeness of violinists shows extreme ignorance of the world.) They are like the audience that are around the event. Some are enjoying the show while others turn a blind eye. The only one concerned is captured in a glass cage.

The fortune-teller goes on provoking her and mocking her. Go on, do it and let our lives be the carnival of rust- something that lost its efficiency and now is reduced to a showpiece. Just when she successfully hits all the targets, the drumming twins emerge and celebrate her victory. She gives away the last penny for the game and is leaving now. They all are happy to make her like themselves- perfect and without any flaws. These are the devils that have achieved their goal.

I recently returned from a week long cruise on the MSC Seaside. During this cruise we were docked alongside several Carnival ships along with other cruise lines. The Carnival ships were all very rusty while the ships from other cruise lines showed very little rust coming through the hull. Many years ago I went on numerous Carnival Cruises. I don't remember this being the case. Has something happened?

It could just be that the ships you were docked near are approaching drydock, where the paint will be touched up or completely redone. Some paintwork is done on port days, but much of the hull can be inaccessible. There could also be other factors like the color of the hull - eg. something like Cunard, TUI or Disney won't show a lot of rust on first glance, even ships with lighter (but colored) hulls like Royal or Celebrity. White is most certainly the worst when it comes to rust/discoloration.

most of the rust spots i seen on ships is where things rub against the paint causing the paint to lose its protection and allows rust to from. most common areas is the front and aft mooning ropes when it is winched onboard the ship, deck 0 area where the tender/water shuttles bumpers rub against the ship and the around the area where they drag the gangway out and into the ship

I agree that all ships have some rust but I watch the web cams a lot and have also noticed that the Carnival ships seem to show more rust lately. In the past I have seen crew doing touch up painting the hull areas while on port stops to keep them looking better but that doesn't seem to be happening so much recently. They're looking a bit shabby.

We just got off the Horizon and I swear, the ship had little or no rust showing. On my Cove Balcony there was none. I also noticed every time we hit a port the Deck Division guys were out on the dock touching up the hull. I thought maybe the Captain was getting transferred and didn't want to turnover a rusty ship to the new Captain.

I have also commented on the rush on the ships we have been on and it does seem that some of the Carnival ship seem much worse than the other lines - But it doesn't change the product in the ship - If you like it than you don't care. If you don't like the product or have a disappointing cruise the rust will become a focal point. All ships do rust but it seems other lines are more careful to cover it up.

Salt is a corrosive substance so this is completely normal. I sailed the Magic this year and my balcony had a little rust (it was a cove so very close to the water line). It didn't effect my cruise at all.

I find this topic perplexing. I can't imagine caring about a bit of rust showing though the paint... or noticing some rust on my balcony or near external ship railings. It's a ship in salt water -- it's expected. Eventually, a cruise line will take care of any rust. e24fc04721
