Come feed the rain

'Cause I'm thirsty for your love dancing underneath the skies of lust

Yeah, feed the rain

'Cause without your love my life ain't nothing but this carnival of rust

Bittersweet mood, Tarot cards and rust. Those were the first three things we talked about when planning the promo with the guys. Beautiful song & a great great album, even better than their debut imo.[4]

I think the video dealt with the heart of the lyrics. Sometimes you have things that don't seem important to you before they're gone, and when they start walking away and you realize it, it's too late or physically impossible to get them back. The funny thing is that the song deals with love, whereas in the video the setting is a platonic love affair between two challenged characters that have one crucial difference to the others around them. They're able to see how sick the world is around them and are poisoned by it. The inspiration to the whole setting just came from something that Marko said to me in one of our brainstorming sessions. When I asked him why would he make songs about larger tragedies of the world when everything seems fairly alright in Finland, he told me to turn on the tv and the news to see how sick the world was around us.[5]

Secondly, my another apology for a haste from me. I should've probably post the whole thoughts at once, including the music video analysis. I'll add it sometime later when I have some time and willpower to spare. That's a promise, due to a special place in my soul this song takes.

And thirdly, the reason to post all of this exactly here is that I did not find a better place to post something this long and, I hope, useful to at least someone who would be in search for meaning of this song on the web. I don't claim that my interpretation is the one best possible, but I, again, hope for its usefulness in the light of the song's fake sadness (and, I think, cruelty) which may upset or even possibly brake someone (which is not author's intention!), exactly as things have turned out with me in the past.

I would like to talk about the title before starting the analysis. The song is titled Carnival of Rust. A carnival is a celebration and place of joy. A carnival is organized when a festival is near or to celebrate a grand occasion. It is a symbol of victory of good over evil and a spirit of togetherness all over the world, be it the Carnival of Rio, The Citgus carnival of Spain, Ivrea carnival of Italy or Janmashtmi / Dussehra carnival of India.

However, the song here takes a very ironic and shocking turn when it talks about Carnival of Rust. Rust forms on metal and it makes it useless or at least destroys it to a large extent. This title is celebrating the destruction and the demolition caused by the Rust that has grown in everyone. It shows a dystopian world where people are not what they appear. They are hidden under masks, body paints, or costumes. The first shot of the song is the picture of the gate of the carnival. It is lifeless and dull. There is not much light. It is dark, literally and metaphorically. There are lights all around but the gate seems like an entrance to a haunted house. Do notice the visual effects and how the camera pans to the gate. You are going to the gate in a twisty tipsy ride. It is not a simple journey. It has some twisted realities that you are going to witness.

These lines show how she is getting lured to the game and the game of bullfighting starts. The Matador ( the game owner) is instigating her to come and try her luck in the game. The carnival has some other people too. A pair of violinists busy play music, a couple sitting on a long table playing with fire. ( Notice how the table signifies distance while the closeness of violinists shows extreme ignorance of the world.) They are like the audience that are around the event. Some are enjoying the show while others turn a blind eye. The only one concerned is captured in a glass cage.

The fortune-teller goes on provoking her and mocking her. Go on, do it and let our lives be the carnival of rust- something that lost its efficiency and now is reduced to a showpiece. Just when she successfully hits all the targets, the drumming twins emerge and celebrate her victory. She gives away the last penny for the game and is leaving now. They all are happy to make her like themselves- perfect and without any flaws. These are the devils that have achieved their goal.

After singing the heartfelt song, the fortune teller stops and the ticket comes out. An inscription that might change something. Just when the video is about to end and the song is over, the girl looks behind at the fortune teller. He has died. She looks at him and the moon is shown. The beginning and the end show the moon- smiling while sleeping comfortably. Exactly how each of the people there felt in blissful ignorance. The song ends right then on an open note. Maybe the girl did something to save them. Maybe she becomes one of them. It just ends to your imagination.

This was the song analysis of the Carnival of Rust. It has been a complex and complicated one. Unlike other videos, this follows a very specific genre and style. Everything from lyrics to the visuals is perfectly aligned to give us a specific look. It is indeed a masterpiece. It touches upon things like humanity and ignorance, love and hatred. This was released back in 2006. However, the relatability and the relevance has only increased and it is indeed a work of a genius.

I think its about a man who avoided his lover and ran after money. They had fight about it, but he never listened to her. At one point she decided to leave him. And this basically woke him up and as the song goes he asks her to stay with him. In the song he basically says that how love is now more important to him than anything else and that if she leaves him he will not able to take it.

It is the best song of poets of the fall. His manly voice makes it alive and sad, all at the same time. I like the part when he says "Don't walk away, don't walk away, oh, when the world is burningDon't walk away, don't walk away, oh, when the heart is yearning" It shows that he is falling apart.

To me it's about troubles in a relationship where both people feel love for each other, but things just don't seem to work out, even though they've tried to make it better. I love this song, it's creepy, desperate and depressing but also beautiful.

If you go with java's understanding of the song, then the foil and red cape can hold symbolistic meaning. the red cape represents a sort of facade, held up infront of the artist, which is whisked away to reveal the truth about the singers life. In this case he realises that all his efforts for money are for naught without his love in his life. This with the addition of the foil would probably stand to be the idea that without his partner, he might aswell not live on. Losing his partner would be like the deathblow, hence the weapon.

think i messed up on red cape and foil. foil is more likely a reference to dueling/fencing. red cape still makes me think of a superman type of "other man" in that grass-is-greener context whereby closing in for a kill seems more applicable in how he and this other man are battling this duel for her. ya... and savior is definitely not a kind of religious savior. it seems like a direct metaphor to this other man in a song of indirectness and insinuation.

Empty theatre, empty stage and some windy sound blowing through it all. It was an eerie atmosphere not unlike the official video for Carnival of Rust. I liked that a lot, it was clever I thought. The crescendo by the end of the song, with the light effects, nothing was left to chance. e24fc04721
