Artist Statement

I am interested in drawing as experience, as reflection, and as portals to memory. My approach to drawing has two expressions. The first as a practice of observation. I love documenting what I see as I see it and engaging all my senses as I draw. These drawings often emerge as quick sketches in place. In those moments, drawing is my archive. A catalog. A record of sights, sounds, emotions, and a timeline of my artistic growth.

My second approach is through comics and sequential art. Comics for me is a medium that is akin to a performance. Careful consideration must be given to imagery, framing, pacing, and words. Like a performance, they work together to evoke an experience that moves the reader. To me it is the upmost creative challenge and one that can transcend communication (in the most traditional sense). Nor is comics bounded by commercial modes of making and production.

Alongside my other creative interests—poetry, photography, skateboarding, and writing, I love exploring the ways in which I can combine these practices into single experiences like zines.

Drawing is how I discover more about myself and my becoming. My professional work began in interaction design, a practice of creating for experience. With my drawings, I am also creating for experience, but unlike design there is more room for malleability, imperfection, and the personal to emerge in my work.

Zines are how I bring my art and writing to others. Zinemaking evokes interactivity and connection. It allows me to connect with readers over time and space, page by page. It's so much fun to share my experience through the tangible, to create a physical experience in tandem with the art and writing I curate across each page.

Thank you for reading.
