Pottery & Drums Summer Camp
July 17-21, 2023
The summer of 2023, I partnered with Uptown Clay and Marimba Band to offer a one-week pottery and drums camp in July. We got a really nice small group of kids ranging from 2nd grade to 6th grade. I taught 3 hours every day in the morning and after lunch the students played music with Marimba Band.
Below are pictures of their finished pieces and pictures of the process during camp. Hope you enjoy their amazing work!
Day 4 Project: Slab Building with Many small shapes
Students learned to create platters by making many small slabs and binding them together by scoring and slipping. The small slabs were made with cookie cutters and leaves. Students also finished painting the remaining pieces.
Day 3: Maracas and Ocarinas using pinch pots
Students made pinch pots to create small musical instruments like maracas and ocarinas. Then students painted their mugs by using underglaze (color slip).
Day 2 Project: Slab building
Students learned how to make slabs and slip and score to create vessels like mugs.
Day 1 Project: Coil Pots
Students learned about the different types of coil pots and the history of coil points, which goes back over 19,000 years.
