Carmageddon is the first of a series of graphically violent driving-oriented video games produced by Stainless Games, published by Interplay and SCi and released June 30, 1997 on Windows PC and Macintosh. It has the dubious title of being a poster child for video game controversy.

Carmageddon Splat Pack was the only official expansion pack for Carmageddon, released in 1997. It was a standalone game, but required the Carmageddon disc to install. The pack featured 19 new cars and 8 new locations, as well as a patch to enable 3DFX Glide support in Carmageddon.

The game got a reboot with Carmageddon: Reincarnation in 2015, taking vehicle damage system to an insane new level and a lot cooler looking cars (and hires too).

Stainless did not disappoint. It is a monster and it follows the same gorgeous vehicular combat/racing type as Carmageddon (1997). The Twister is available in Reincarnation too, but I wanted to stay true to the original, creating a somewhat real-looking version based on a low poly game car.

Carmageddon is a graphically violent vehicular combat 1997 PC video game. It was later ported to other platforms, and spawned a series of follow-up titles. It was inspired by the 1975 cult classic movie Death Race 2000. The game was produced by Stainless Games, published by Interplay and SCi.

It seems that on that morning in 1997, the game ran out of memory and exited after 40 seconds, leaving only a few lines of debug output, but its enough to see the format of the file in case we want to reproduce it faithfully.

It's not 1997 nor DOS at that point. 1997 didn't have the Voodoo2 either (and 3dfx cards aren't really a "high requirement" nor were there many games that flatout reqruied them from the get go in 1997. A Voodoo Graphics was relatively inexpensive compared to MMX-capable Intel processors alone)

Carmageddon originally launched in 1997 on PC, amid a wave of tabloid-generated controversy in the UK. The British Board of Film Classification, responsible for handing out the country's game ratings at the time, was not at all happy about Carmageddon's wanton vehicular violence and incentivised pedestrian slaughter. As a result, developer Stainless Games was forced to swap Carmageddon's squishable humans for green-blooded zombies. However, ten months later, after a successful appeal, the uncensored version was released.

Accelerating into almost instant stardom in 1997 with its first game Carmageddon, UK studio Stainless Games seemed destined to have it all. The satirical and sadistic driving game and its sequel both topped the games charts, but when publisher SCI brought in a different studio for the poorly-received third game, both the series and Stainless fell on harder times. Stainless slowly built its way back up primarily via contract work, eventually finding significant commercial success with 2009 console/PC download title Magic The Gathering - Duels of the Planeswalkers, which at the time became the fastest-selling XBLA game ever. Earlier this year, Stainless was able to buy back the rights to Carmageddon from new Eidos/SCI owner Square Enix, and is working on a new download title, Carmageddon: Reincarnation.

The BBFC has rejected Manhunt 2, meaning that the game now cannot legally be supplied anywhere in the UK. The last game to be similarly treated was Carmageddon, back in 1997. Paul Jackson, of the Entertainment & Leisure Software Association, said that the decision proved that the UK has a ratings system that is effective: "It shows it works and works well." ff782bc1db
