In Celebration of a New Age

The original three R’s of the early 1980’s gay coalition, Act-Up—Respect, Recognition, and Resolve—are imprinted on the foreheads of three religious figureheads in three vernaculars: Christ (Respect in Latin), Vishnu (Recognition in Hindi, center), and Buddha (Resolve in Chinese).  This optimistic image, part of the group shown inside the 1992 “Refuge” installation, anticipates the day when all Homosexuals are given the sanctity deprived them for centuries.  Importantly, this work is now in the collection of The Detroit Institute of Arts as of 2022.

A picture of "Refuge" appears below, and viewers can click on it to read more about it and to enlarge it in the Exhibits/Installations section.
