This painting depicts a betrayer I knew decades ago—a truly Shakespearean "Iago."  The ISS stands for "I Stole Sanctuary," which is rather metaphorical, for he had deprived me of a peace of mind at that particular time, years ago.  I've written a poem about this work, titled “Farrago.”  “Fairyland had unnerved— / Memories were well-served. // Once in time, I had bent / To his nihilist blows— / This wretched malcontent / And his sad farragoes. // His smiles drank others’ tears— / Bottom, with donkey ears.”
