This drawing was a donation to the annual ArtWorks Detroit auction, sponsored by the non-profit, Matrix Human Services. I wrote the following poem in memory of my mother and with the intention of emphasizing the presence of COVID-19 still present in our lives and in my life, specifically, as an essential worker employed in the retail sector. “The blackened Corona watches with nineteen deadening eyes. / I can taste, hear, and touch, smell and foresee the enormity yet vacuity of its guise. / Erupting, corrupting, and rupturing all matter, rending the senses with fear; / Now I lay me down to sleep as mother had in her sixty-fourth year.”
