The Somali Youth Support Project (SYSP) is a community-driven initiative based in the west-end of Ottawa. Its primary aim is to enhance the well-being and integration of Somali youth by leveraging community assets and partnerships. Additionally, the project offers support to Somali parents through educational opportunities, social connections, and cultural activities. Some of the project's offerings include weekly drop-in groups for youth, a Youth Leadership and Advocacy Group, bi-weekly Parent Group, recreational activities, community celebrations, outreach, advocacy, and a supportive network. These activities are designed to foster cultural exploration, personal development, and community engagement for both youth and parents.
The Somali Canadian Youth Centre (SCYC) provides advocacy, educational programs, leadership training, social services and broad supports that are culturally sensitive to youth and their families in the Ottawa area. The mission of the SCYC has been to help youth become contributing citizens. To further our mission we deliver various services, programs and support as required. We emphasize positive growth in youth, to develop the next generation of leaders and to prevent or reduce antisocial behaviour and recidivism. SCYC is focused on creating a better future for at-risk youth.
The African Canadian Association of Ottawa (ACAO) is a community-based organization in Ottawa, Canada, committed to representing and serving individuals of African descent. Their mission includes fostering a sense of belonging, cultural awareness, and empowerment within the African Canadian community. ACAO offers diverse services, educational programs, cultural events, social gatherings, and advocacy initiatives to address the unique needs of African Canadians in the region. We are a grassroots group of young professionals who created the Level U program to train black youth to develop the core, essential career skills needed to succeed in finding jobs and excelling in their careers. Through a combination of workshops, retreats, and ongoing mentorship our end goal is to equip black youth and grant them the confidence to find or create meaningful employment.
The African, Caribbean & Black Wellness & Resource Centre (ACB) is an organization committed to educating, enriching, and empowering residents of the Ottawa/Gatineau area. The centre seeks to strengthen our community by fostering unity, self-determination, cooperative economics, collective work, and creativity. Together we can make a better tomorrow by building a stronger society, making connections, helping our community, and improving our future!
Given that Black people in Canada, and by extension Ottawa, face multiple and intersecting forms of discrimination, BOC aims to provide a safe space for the Black Communities in Ottawa and Gatineau to be able to come together, share resources, educate and empower one another for full participation in all aspects of Canadian society. Black Ottawa Connect is a non-profit organization on a mission to make space for Black people to gather, to heal & to thrive.
