Difficulties in handwriting can stem from weak upper extremity muscles of the shoulders, arms, hands and fingers. It is possible to strengthen these muscles using coloring, playdough, kid-safe scissors, and tweezers. Writing on vertical surfaces or tracing shapes and letters in the air also strengthens the shoulders and arms to help with writing.
Outdoor activities that strengthen hands are pushing, pulling, hanging from bars or trees, climbing, digging in dirt, carrying groceries, etc.
