Suggested essay topic for 2025-26 first semester: "Outline the design of a set of submission criteria for an essay in an English language course in HKUSPACE Community College to allow students the use of AI and to guarantee fairness and absence of plagiarism. Then give arguments/reasons arguing/explaining why the methods proposed can fulfill the two objectives stated above." Please consult your own tutor for the finalized topic of the essay and her/his specific requirements.
Note that you can always submit earlier than the deadline. Your teacher will return your submitted work with comments roughly within two weeks.
Also check other links on the bottom of this webpage about writing college essay and grading information. Late submission and plagiarism are things you should always avoid. When you submit by Turnitin, you can see the "scores" about the similarity to public/published materials: grading may be subject to such considerations and so please refrain from the "copy-and-paste" method. Guidelines:
Note the three different areas/topics (including basic knowledge in AI) in this course. The first one is on your own area of study and is only related to the essay writing part of the assessment. The second one is on ethical reasoning and is only related to the group presentation. The final part is on logical skills and is only related to the final quiz, which demands your ability to solve some very specific problems such as filling in a truth-table. So, you need to revise by doing some exercises at home.
The second topic is on ethical reasoning. The assessment is a group presentation in the tutorial. This involves research and cooperation of the group members. Please follow the instruction of your tutor to achieve the best result.
Please follow the instruction of your tutor carefully concerning the essay writing. You need to submit a (100-150 words) summary of your essay in the third tutorial and then your tutor will grade and make comments. Based on the feedback, you will submit the complete essay (400-450 words) on or before the 6th tutorial. Please refer to the guideline on writing an argumentative essay in this course website. Don’t forget to do a spellcheck before submission. The main risk of failing is plagiarism and/or over-reliance on AI; hence, please don’t copy-and-paste materials from the web or books. Also note that in case you want to quote and make reference, you have to follow the academic formats such as APA or MLA.
You can also obtain marks by participating in the tutorials. Besides attendance, your tutor will also assess how well you engage in the discussion during the tutorials.
You should now be aware that only the quiz demands revision of course materials. So, please revise the relevant topics early and systematically.
Recommended texts: you need no textbook in this course. Relevant materials will be available on the course website. You may, however, peruse the following two books to broaden your understanding of logic and critical thinking:
