Design and development of an assistive Upper Body Robotic Exoskeleton System
Project code: PN-III-P2-2.1-PED-2019-1057
Project no: 535PED ⁄ 2020
Project period: 01.11.2020 - 31.10.2022
Cardiac rehabilitation involves delivery of structured exercise, education and risk reduction, in a cost-effective manner. Robust evidence demonstrates it reduces mortality up to 25%, improves functional capacity, as well as decreases re-hospitalization. A suitable rehabilitation is essential for enabling those people to live independently and enhance their Quality of Life as they age. Most of these rehabilitation treatments need sessions of rehabilitation therapy to improve joint range of motion, fortify muscles, restore cardiac functional capabilities, and resolve impairments.
The CardioVR-ReTone project aims to provide motor recovery of patients following a cardiac surgery or a major cardiac event to ensure a normal - active and independent - life by developing an assistive Upper Body Robotic Exoskeleton System enhanced with a Non-Immersive Virtual Reality Exergame (CardioVR-ReTone).
The overall objective of the project is to design and develop an assistive Upper Body Robotic Exoskeleton System enhanced with a Non-Immersive Virtual Reality and Artificial Intelligence Exergame (CardioVR-ReTone) to support motor recovery of patients following an open cardiac surgery or a major cardiac event.
The specific objectives of the project are:
(O1). Design and manufacture the prototype of robotic exoskeleton system - CardioVR-ReTone;
(O2). Design and development of VR module and functionalities that will interface with user requests and actions triggered from the robotic exoskeleton;
(O3). Integrate all components of CardioVR-ReTone system (Upper Body Robotic Exoskeleton, and the Non-Immersive Virtual Reality Exergame system);
(O4). Demonstration of the concept validity and testing the CardioVR-ReTone prototype functionalities in the research laboratories/clinical environment and validate the obtained results for (TRL4);
(O5). Dissemination of results.
