We, the undersigned Cardiff University students, staff and alumni, wish to register our opposition to the open letter published on 17 June by a number of lecturers demanding the university cut ties with Stonewall over the charity's firm support of trans rights.
At a time when trans and non-binary people are subject to near-constant inflammatory media attention, when access to life-saving health care for trans people has been continually eroded, with LGBTQ+ hate crimes on the rise, and with trans and non-binary people disproportionately likely to experience poverty, unemployment and homelessness, we believe it is more important than ever for Cardiff University to defend the rights of its queer, trans and non-binary students and staff, and to ensure trans and non-binary people feel welcome in all its spaces.
The letter asserts that Stonewall’s criticism of transphobia is a matter of academic freedom, and that expressing anti-trans views, or ‘disputing’ trans gender identities, is a protected characteristic under the Equality Act. Among many other disputable claims in the letter, this is a gross misreading of the Equality Act: transphobic views, like homophobic views, are only protected beliefs – people have the right to hold these views, but Universities and other institutions have no duty to protect them from criticism or academic rigour in a democratic society. The right of trans and non-binary people to live their lives as themselves, in dignity, safety and peace is not an academic ‘debate’ of any intellectual or moral merit – and this right does not inhibit the right of cisgender women to do the same.
Cardiff University has a strong and inclusive LGBTQ+ network. This letter represents an attempt to divide students and staff. It has already created an atmosphere of discomfort and fear among queer students and staff. We ask Cardiff University for a renewed statement of commitment to the rights and wellbeing of their LGBTQ+ staff and students.
