If you find yourself with a little extra free time you should consider sorting through all your documents. I think I let my “drawer of documents” pile up for about three years before finally realizing this was not going to work anymore. I was glad to have a designated place for all of my belongings, but just a stack of papers laying on top of each other was not going to cut it anymore. Especially when I have to go back and try to dig through years worth of papers with no organization at all. This is why I have created this minisite too.
Most people have a specific filing drawer in their desk at home to keep their documents nice and organized. Thing is, not everyone has the luxury of having an office desk in their home. I know I certainly don’t. I also do not have access to a filing cabinet that could store the years of documents.
The next best thing I have found is file storage boxes. These cardboard boxes are a price-friendly alternative to a filing cabinet or office desk. I can buy a few different boxes and label them according to what I will keep on the inside. If I really want to get crafty and professional you can put little labels inside the box to separate a little more. I really like the file storage drawers as it is essentially two cardboard boxes stacked on top of each other like an actual filing cabinet. The drawers even slide out for easy access to files. If I have multiple boxes I really like the drawer element because then I don’t have to take a box off the top of another to access my files.
Most people like to file their papers by year. If you are someone who likes to file everything away just for security reasons, then it would be beneficial to have multiple boxes to easily decide which the box the document you are looking for is in. Once you sort your documents by year then you can easily sort them into different categories. You can separate receipts, bills, bank statements, taxes and more. This way you don’t have to awkwardly shuffle through a mound of paper with no organization.
It can be hard to get started and get sorting. But the documents are much better preserved inside of a filing box than inside a drawer stacked on top of each other. And if you haven’t been a person to keep your files before, now is a great time to start thinking about that.
