Teaching Philosophy

My main objective as an educator in nutrition is to foster a learning environment to stimulate appreciation for nutrition and health behavior and share a variety of perspectives to allow students to form their own opinions.  I aim to establish a positive and safe learning environment, adjust course activities to various learning styles, and include diverse experiential learning. For students planning a career in nutrition, psychology, public health, or medicine, I want to refine their critical thinking and communication skills so that they can be successful in their careers and go on to make groundbreaking discoveries that save lives.

My experience learning nutrition concepts and methods has involved a combination of traditional lectures and hands on applied practice. I incorporate both of these processes in my own teaching. The process of teaching nutrition is flexible and can be adapted to the various learning styles of the students.  By teaching students key skills such as critical thinking and communication, they will be able to apply those concepts to many other classes as well as their future work. Many students choose the field of nutrition because of some sort of firsthand experience with a nutrition issue or disease, either with themselves or a family member. I hope to facilitate fruitful discussions in class, where students feel comfortable sharing these experiences in order to better connect with the content. The field of nutrition is exciting and constantly evolving. I believe that approaching my teaching with respect, patience, and excitement will ensure that my love and appreciation of nutrition will be contagious to the students and that it will ignite a spark in them that they carry with them to their future careers.
