After you upgrade to Windows 10, you can reinstall or do a clean installation on the same device. You won't need a product key to reactivate Windows 10 on the same hardware. For more info on how to create your own Windows 10 installation media, see the Microsoft software download website.

During the upgrade, you might be asked to free up space on your device or attach an external drive with sufficient space to continue with the upgrade. If you attach an external drive, make sure to keep it in a safe place after the upgrade in case you need it for recovery options.

I installed pgAdmin 4 as part of the postgres installer for Windows. pgAdmin is now telling me there is a newer version (4.8, > 4.5 which I have). However, there is no built in upgrade functionality that I can see, and when I went to download and run the pgAdmin 4 installer to upgrade, it installed itself in the wrong place, leading to problems.

To anyone finding this post (like me), before uninstalling your current pgAdmin 4, be aware that there may be limits on compatible versions based on your version of PostgreSQL. Following the instructions by Claudio Corchez, I removed my existing pgAdmin 4 and downloaded the latest 6.15. When I attempted to install it, the installer informed me that this version was not compatible with my version of PostgreSQL 10.3. So, I headed back and downloaded 4.30, which is now running. Unfortunately, it warns me each time I run it that a newer version is available. I just need to upgrade my entire PostgreSQL installation.

Update (26 September 2016): It is no longer needed to uninstall your previous version of Git to upgraded it to the latest; the installer package found at Git Windows download site takes care of all. Just follow the prompts.

Using git-friendly tools like cmder will make your life much easier. You don't really have to use dual boot or cygwin anymore since the support for git in windows is already top-notch now. (Git for windows installs msysgit which includes all necessary unix tools from MinGW. MinGW has been there for a while and is pretty stable. If you want you can install the full version of msysgit rather than Git for Windows. msysgit is available on Git for windows page at the bottom.)

Firstly, I would read the upgrade guides written by Hashicorp to make upgrading versions transparent. In your case I would read both 0.10 and 0.11 as they're likely to have changes that will affect you.

As you know the Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2 are out of support on January 14th, 2020. Customer will need to upgrade their Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2 to a newer version of Windows Server or migrate these servers to Microsoft Azure and get three years of extended security support for free, which will give you more time to upgrade your servers, redeploy your apps or rearchitect your applications. If you want to have more information about how to migrate your servers to Azure, check out the Azure migration center. There are many ways you can migrate your server applications to a newer version of Windows Server. This blog post covers how you in-place upgrade Windows Server 2008 R2 to Windows Server 2019. You can find more information about Windows Server 2019 installations and upgrades on Microsoft Docs.

You can directly do an in-place upgrade to Windows Server 2019 from Windows Server 2016 and Windows Server 2012 R2. This means, to upgrade from Windows Server 2008 R2 to Windows Server 2019, you will have two consecutive upgrade processes.

Before you start in-place upgrade your servers, make sure you plan your upgrade and make sure you have all the information, to avoid surprises at the end of the migration. The Windows Server Upgrade Center helps you with a checklist which includes, for example, the following:

I know I have mentioned it before, make sure you have a backup you can restore of the server you are performing the in-place upgrade. Also, make sure that you are aware that the following upgrade processes cause downtime.

After the upgrade to Windows Server 2012, log in and check if the server has been successfully upgraded. Make sure you test if the applications are running like expected and if users can access the application. Make sure that the IP and firewall configuration of your server still allows clients to access your system.

After the upgrade to Windows Server 2019, log in and check if the server has been successfully upgraded. Make sure you test if the applications are running like expected and if users can access the application. Make sure that the IP and firewall configuration of your server still allows clients to access your system.

There are many ways you can upgrade or migrate your applications, in-place upgrade is just one of them, and might not always fit. However, in some scenarios, it is the easiest way to get to a newer version of Windows Server. I hope this gives you an overview about how you can do in-place upgrades from Windows Server 2008 R2 to Windows Server 2019. If you have any questions or tips for the upgrades, leave a comment below.

I just successfully did an in-place upgrade of Windows 8.1 Enterprise to Windows 10 Enterprise. I was able to do this by creating Windows 10 installation media (generic non-Enterprise edition) onto a USB key and running the setup file in Windows 8.1 Enterprise.

I was actually taking the steps to do a fresh install of Windows 10 Home (because I no longer have an easy way to get an enterprise license), so I was pleasantly surprised to find an in-place upgrade worked without a Windows 10 Enterprise license. So if you're having this issue, I suggest giving the regular Windows 10 installer a try by running it in Windows 8.1 Enterprise.

Note that the official docs on Windows upgrade paths confirm that a Windows 8.1 Enterprise to Windows 10 Enterprise full upgrade is possible, i.e. an upgrade where personal data, settings, and applications are maintained. (One of the comments here was suggesting otherwise.)

Also I don't remember exactly when but I did have a step in the process where the Windows 10 installation media creation tool said "This version of Windows is not supported" or similar, but when I ran the setup file from the USB key, it recognized my enterprise version and offered to upgrade to Windows 10 Enterprise.

(And from what I understand, while the official free upgrade to Windows 10 ended in July 2016, it looks like Microsoft's activation servers still give out digital licenses after upgrading from an earlier Windows version. This page (see "Is Your License Valid") speculates as to why. It doesn't mention Enterprise licenses, but I can confirm that my Windows 10 Enterprise is activated when I upgraded in July 2019. Perhaps even if Upgrade Assistant doesn't work, maybe using the Windows Installer directly is a workaround to updating to Windows 10 for free? It's a bit confusing and I'm not entirely sure, but this is my best guess to explain why it let me upgrade to Windows 10 Enterprise for free.)

An in-place upgrade allows you to go from an older operating system to a newer one while keepingyour settings, server roles, and data intact. This article teaches you how to move to a laterversion of Windows Server by using an in-place upgrade.

This article covers the in-place Windows Server upgrade process for non-Azure servers and virtual machines (VMs) only. To do an in-place upgrade of Windows Server running in an Azure virtual machine (VM), see In-place upgrade for VMs running Windows Server in Azure.

If you're upgrading a Windows Server 2012 or Windows Server 2012 R2 server with Configuration Manager installed, also follow the pre-upgrade and post-upgrade instructions at Upgrade on-premises infrastructure that supports Configuration Manager.

We recommend that you collect some information from your devices for diagnostic and troubleshootingpurposes in case the upgrade is unsuccessful. We also recommend you store the information somewhereyou can get to even if you can't access your device.

After you've collected all of your Windows Server-related information, we recommend that you back upyour server operating system, apps, and VMs. You must also shut down, quick migrate, orlive migrate any VMs currently running on the server. You can't have any VMs running during the in-place upgrade.

Now that you've completed your prerequisites and collected diagnostic information, you're ready toperform the upgrade. In this section, you use Windows Server Setup to select the settings forthe upgrade. Windows Server Setup uses these settings to upgrade your version of Windows Server, during which time your computer restarts several times.

Perform a Windows Server in-place upgrade with AWS MGN

If your Windows 2012 or Windows 2012 R2 servers are still running in an on-premises environment, you can migrate those servers to AWS with AWS MGN. You can configure AWS MGN to upgrade the servers to a new version of Windows at the end of the migration. Read on for steps to configure AWS MGN. You can refer to this blog article to understand the steps to migrate with AWS MGN.

AWS MGN configuration

AWS MGN allows you to execute various predefined post-launch actions on your Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) launch instance. We will use one of the built-in post-launch templates to perform a Windows Server in-place upgrade.

10. When you do the cutover in AWS MGN, the two post-launch actions that you have configured in step 9 will perform the installation of SSM Agent and the in-place upgrade to the newer version of Windows OS (as seen in Figure 11).

This article deals with upgrading from Windows versions that are out of support. For a current version of this article, please see Windows upgrade paths that deals with currently supported versions of Windows.
