Hi there! My name is Cara Smulevitz, and I've been teaching Art History since 2004. I've lived in San Diego since 2016, but all of my academic training took place in Chicago, where I was born and raised.
When I'm not looking at or reading about art I love taking walks, riding my bike around the city, reading novels, and hanging with friends.
I completed a PhD in Art History at the University of Illinois, in 2015, where I specialized in Contemporary Art and Gender & Women's Studies. My doctoral research focussed on performance art, and on crossovers and overlap between performance art and musical performance.
I've taught courses covering pretty much every period in Western Art History, but I especially enjoy teaching Modern and Contemporary Art. In 2016 I accepted a position at San Diego Mesa College and moved here with my husband Chris (he's an artist, here is his website). We also live with a very cute puppy called Judy (she's a dog, she doesn't have a website). And here they both are below!
