1. Introduction
Captio ("Captio," "we," "our," or "the app") is a video-captioning and editing application developed by codeBage for Android and iOS. This Privacy Policy explains what information is processed when you use Captio, why it is processed, when it is shared with service providers, and the choices available to you.
By using Captio, you acknowledge the practices described in this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree with this Policy, please do not use the app.
2. Information Captio Processes
Videos, audio, captions, and project information
Captio processes videos that you choose from your device, audio extracted from those videos, generated or edited captions, caption timing, translations, style selections, export settings, and project thumbnails.
Your complete video files and saved projects are stored locally in the app's private storage unless you choose to export a video to your photo library. Captio does not upload your complete video file to our servers. Certain cloud features may transmit extracted audio, caption text, or caption timing as described below.
Local and offline processing
On Android, free offline transcription uses a downloaded Whisper speech-recognition model and processes the extracted audio on the device.
On iOS, free transcription currently uses Apple's Speech Recognition service. With your permission, audio is provided to Apple's Speech framework and may be sent to Apple for processing. Apple's privacy terms apply to this processing.
Cloud transcription
Captio Pro users may use cloud transcription. When cloud transcription is selected, Captio:
1. extracts audio from the selected video;
2. temporarily uploads the extracted audio to Google Firebase Cloud Storage;
3. sends the audio to Deepgram for speech-to-text processing; and
4. deletes the temporary Cloud Storage audio file after the transcription attempt completes or fails.
The complete video is not uploaded for cloud transcription. Deepgram may process the audio and related technical information according to its own privacy policy and service terms.
Translation, Magic Clips, and AI voiceovers
Captio uses Google's Gemini API for certain Captio Pro features:
Translation: caption text and the selected source and target languages are sent for translation.
-Magic Clips: caption text and timing are sent to identify potentially engaging moments.
AI voiceovers: the original or translated caption text, selected voice, and language are sent to generate speech audio.
Captio does not send the complete video to Gemini for these features. Generated results are returned to the app and used to create or export your project.
Account and service identifiers
Captio does not require you to provide a name, email address, phone number, or password. Cloud features use Firebase Anonymous Authentication, which creates a random account identifier for security, abuse prevention, and usage-limit enforcement.
Firebase App Check may process app-attestation tokens and device or app-integrity information to confirm that requests come from a legitimate copy of Captio. Firebase and Cloud Functions may also process IP address, user-agent, request metadata, error information, and security diagnostics.
Usage limits
For Captio Pro cloud features, we store monthly usage totals associated with the anonymous Firebase identifier, such as cloud-transcription seconds and the number of AI voiceovers used. These records are used to apply the limits shown in the app, prevent abuse, and control service costs.
The free version of Captio uses Google AdMob to display advertisements. Depending on your device, region, permissions, and consent choices, Google and its advertising partners may process:
- IP address and approximate location derived from IP address;
- device and app information;
- advertising or device identifiers where permitted;
- ad impressions, clicks, interactions, and frequency information;
- consent choices; and
- diagnostic and fraud-prevention information.
Ads may be personalized, non-personalized, limited, or used only for technical ad delivery, depending on applicable law and your choices. Where required, Captio presents Google's User Messaging Platform consent form. You can revisit available choices through **Settings > Ad privacy choices**. Captio Pro removes third-party advertising from the app.
Purchases and subscriptions are processed by Google Play on Android and Apple's App Store on iOS. Captio receives information needed to determine entitlement status, product identifier, subscription plan, transaction validity, and available Pro limits. We do not receive or store your complete payment-card information.
Support communications
If you contact us for support, we may receive your email address, message, attachments, and any diagnostic or project information you voluntarily provide. We use this information only to respond to your request, troubleshoot problems, prevent abuse, and improve Captio.
3. Device Permissions
Depending on your platform and the feature you use, Captio may request permission to:
- access selected photos or videos so you can import media;
- add exported videos to your photo library;
- use speech recognition to create captions on iOS; and
- access an advertising identifier where applicable and only when system permission is granted.
You can manage these permissions in your device settings. Some features may not work if a required permission is denied.
4. How We Use Information
We process information to:
- provide transcription, caption editing, translation, voiceover, Magic Clips, Smart Cut, and export features;
- save and restore projects on your device;
- authenticate legitimate requests and protect Captio from fraud or misuse;
- manage subscriptions, entitlements, and monthly feature limits;
- display and measure advertising for free users;
- diagnose errors, maintain reliability, and improve the app;
- respond to support requests; and
- comply with legal obligations and enforce our terms.
Where applicable, our legal bases include performing the service you request, your consent, our legitimate interests in operating and securing Captio, and compliance with law.
5. Third-Party Service Providers

We may also disclose information when reasonably necessary to comply with law, respond to valid legal process, protect users or the public, investigate fraud or security incidents, or protect our rights and property.
We do not sell your complete videos, audio, captions, name, email address, or payment information. Advertising providers may process or share advertising-related data as described above and according to your consent choices and applicable law.
6. Data Storage and Retention
- Local projects: remain on your device until you delete the project, clear the app's data, or uninstall the app. Copies exported to your photo library remain there until you delete them.
- Temporary cloud-transcription audio: is deleted from Captio's Firebase Cloud Storage after the transcription attempt completes or fails. Deepgram's processing and retention are governed by Deepgram's terms and privacy policy.
- Anonymous account and usage records: may be retained while needed to provide cloud features, enforce monthly limits, prevent abuse, meet accounting or legal requirements, and resolve disputes.
- **Operational logs:** Firebase, Google Cloud, Gemini, Deepgram, Apple, Google Play, and AdMob may retain technical logs, security information, and limited request or response information according to their respective retention policies.
- Support messages: are retained as long as reasonably necessary to answer the request, maintain support history, prevent abuse, or comply with legal obligations.
Information may be processed in the United States and other countries where we or our service providers operate. Those countries may have data-protection laws different from the laws in your country.
7. Security
We use reasonable technical and organizational safeguards, including encrypted network connections, Firebase Authentication, Firebase App Check, access controls, and restricted cloud functions. However, no method of electronic transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
8. Your Choices and Rights
Depending on your location, you may have rights to request access to, correction of, deletion of, restriction of, or objection to certain personal data, or to withdraw consent. You may also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data-protection authority.
You can:
- delete individual Captio projects inside the app;
- delete exported videos from your photo library;
- uninstall Captio to remove its locally stored app data;
- manage Photos, Speech Recognition, and tracking permissions in device settings;

Because Captio uses anonymous authentication, we may need information from the app or device to locate a cloud usage record. We may be unable to associate an anonymous record with you if you have deleted the app or reset its identifier before contacting us.
9. Children's Privacy
Captio is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided information through Captio, contact us so we can review and, where appropriate, delete it.
Captio should not be designated as a "Made for Kids" app unless its advertising, data practices, content, and distribution are separately configured to comply with all applicable children's-privacy requirements.
10. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy to reflect changes to Captio, our providers, or applicable law. We will post the revised Policy at this URL and update the "Last updated" date. Material changes may also be communicated in the app where required.
