Technology is ever-changing and never have I realized this more than completing the @One courses. All the tools I have learned make me think about all the tools I don't know about and those to come!
I attended many conferences in my subject area-English-- and I had completed an MLIS ten years ago so I felt like I have always had an investment in professional development. When I got involved in online teaching, there weren't as many resources out there.
Completing the classes for the certificate in online teaching has been the single best professional development opportunity I have tried. Simply put, it has transformed my teaching, even in the in-person classes. They have been inspiring, engaging, fun, and I have been able to tackle them slowly while working fulltime and often overtime. I couldn't have asked for a better experience and opportunity.
Shortly before completing the final class in the certificate I was after, I attended the CanvaInnovate conference over the summer where I was able to see Malcolm Gladwell speak. I learned a lot about technical and online resources that were not yet being released. I plan to get a lot more involved in conferences that are about English and teaching but also those that are technology-based.
I was so happy that my college sent me to the summer Canvas conference in Long Beach. One of the reasons I was able to go was because I was working on the certificate and showed a big effort in getting all of my classes OEI badged. Malcolm Gladwell was the keynote and I learned about many tech tools--some that haven't even been released yet!
I had to present my sabbatical to the entire school (staff and faculty) and was petrified, so I decided to hide behind technology. My sabbatical featured a lot from my OEI/@ONE work and I presented from my seat by using Adobe Spark. Many commented after my presentation how much they loved how I used technology! (Phew!)
As a result of my work in @One and with OEI, I joined the Distance Ed committee. Here is a rare sighting of some of us working together in person during a flex day! We put on tech training days for all faculty and I have volunteered for panels and to help people in my department.
I also belong to the tech committee and have been integral in expressing needs of faculty and students as we open an almost completely reconstructed campus with new buildings! Next I plan to work on surveying software needs and budget planning with the team.
