CASCA Kickoff Meeting Recap
The Capital Area School Counselors Association held our 2024 Annual CASCA Kickoff Meeting on Monday, 9/30, at the CAIU. Thank you to everyone who was able to attend and thank you to our amazing presenters for sharing their knowledge and advances in the educational field. All information listed below can be found on the CASCA website. Please share this information with your colleagues.
The CASCA Kickoff Meeting PowerPoint includes our CASCA highlights from last school year and what you can expect from the Association this upcoming year. This school year, CASCA will be accepting dues to better support our professional development offerings and network. Professional dues will be $20 for the school year. Dues for Student counselors and retired school counselors will be $10. Dues can be paid via check payable to CASCA or PayPal by using this link. Please contact April Amos at aamos@caiu.org with any questions or concerns.
A special thank you to Andrea Cassell-Bretz, Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Association for College Admissions Counseling (PACAC) for providing a delicious breakfast. It was a great start to the day. Andrea also provided resource information for counselors who are working with students to navigate the college search process. Here is the handout.
Anne Lauritzen from the Partnership for Career Development (PCD) shared resource materials for schools who are looking to provide hands-on experiences for students. They are hosting the 2024 PCD Career-Ready Symposium & Expo for participating schools and districts on Tuesday, November 12, 2024. Not sure if your school/district participates in the PCD Consortium? Check out the list here.
Karen Rubican is the School Counselor Advisor for PDE. She shared the following in her PowerPoint presentation:
New CEW standards that are being implemented for the 2026-27 school year.
Changes were made to the MY PDE Suite.
Act 1 of 2022 – Assisting Students experiencing education instability. New criteria was recently added.
Discussed the SEL Toolkit that is available through PDE.
Encouraged School Counselors to access the www.PDESAS.org website for further information.
Adam Oldham (CASCA Past-President) and Kristen Boles (CASCA President-Elect) shared the following:
How to effectively advocate for legislative changes that impact our students. They discussed this document with tips for talking with elected officials. These tips are also helpful in our student and professional advocacy efforts within districts and communities.
