LIVING WATER — Our shared water future — Public Talk
Monday, 21st September, 6pm, Constantia Catholic Church Parish Hall, presented by Mike Killick, the City of Cape Town's Director of Bulk Water Services, on CoCT's water resources, Day Zero (2017), climate change, the City's plans to ensure water security, and our role to play in this. He will explain where CT currently gets its water, how the bulk water-supply system operates, and what we learnt from the 2017 drought to improve future water security. Poster.

HERITAGE, THE SEA AND THE CONSTITUTION — PUBLIC SEMINAR. Wednesday, 23 September 2026, 12:30–14:00, Seminar Room 1A, Life Sciences Building, University of the Western Cape. The Environmental Law Association of South Africa, the UWC Faculty of Law and the Global Environmental Law Centre invite the public to Heritage, the Sea and the Constitution: Unpacking the Sustaining the Wild Coast Judgment. Three lawyers involved in the Shell Wild Coast seismic-survey litigation—Cormac Cullinan, Wilmien Wicomb and Wandile Brian Zondo—will discuss the Constitutional Court’s judgment and its implications for meaningful consultation, the precautionary principle, climate change in environmental decision-making, the public-trust status of the coast, and the cultural and spiritual significance of the sea.

The documentary follows the Wild Coast communities and their legal battle against Shell’s proposed oil and gas exploration. DOCUMENTARY FILM — MOTHER CITY. 📅 From Thursday, 1 October 2026.🎬 South African cinema release. Filmed over six years, Mother City, directed by Miki Redelinghuys and Pearlie Joubert, follows the housing movement Reclaim the City and explores land, housing, inequality, power and participation in shaping Cape Town. Living Water connection: Although not specifically about water, the film raises an important question also emerging from our work: who gets to participate in decisions about Cape Town’s land, infrastructure and natural resources — and whose needs are prioritised? Miki Redelinghuys also participated in the recent Cape Town data-centre discussion.

On World Food Day, the Climate Justice Charter Movement (CJCM), South African Food Sovereignty Campaign (SAFSC) and partners are holding a National Day of Action focused on hunger, climate resilience and a just transition.
The Cape Town action will march from CPUT District Six to Parliament at 10:00. The organisers are calling for stronger preparation for climate extremes, including protection of water commons, support for agroecology, community participation and assistance for vulnerable communities. Their detailed call includes proposals for community water-commons committees and greater democratic participation in food and water systems. World Food Day Call. People elsewhere are invited to organise local solidarity activities such as community gardens, seed exchanges, food-sovereignty workshops and climate and land-justice actions. Why it connects with Living Water: The event brings together water security, food security, climate resilience and the question of how communities can participate in caring for shared resources — themes that have emerged repeatedly through Living Water. The organisers' poster describes three ways to participate: endorse their call, organise a local solidarity action, or join the Cape Town march.

Mycelium is teaming up with Moncoeur Ocean Hub for an in-person Green Action Week activity centred on the theme “Sharing Community.” Mycelium members are invited to volunteer their skills and creative practices — including theatre, dance, poetry, art, land art, music and storytelling — to help a group of young people tell the stories of their relationship with the ocean. Author and systems thinker Jeremy Lent explores how we might move from an extractive society towards an ecological civilisation grounded in interconnection, regeneration and the common good. His new book: Ecocivilization: Making a World that Works for All (May 2026, Melville House). His vision of “islands of coherence” asks how locally rooted communities can become connected centres of transformation. His bioregional approach is particularly relevant to water: rivers, aquifers and watersheds are understood not simply as resources to exploit, but as part of the living commons to which we belong. Although this event takes place after the Season of Creation, it is included in the Living Waters Calendar because Lent’s thinking opens important questions about water, community, ecological regeneration and how local initiatives — including faith communities — might help build a more life-affirming future. Living Water connection: Jeremy Lent’s idea of “islands of coherence” is inspiring our exploration of how Cape Town’s faith communities might become locally rooted centres of ecological and social regeneration. How do we recognise, support and connect the islands of coherence that already exist here, without replacing or overburdening what communities themselves are already doing? 🌍💧 What if we began to see Cape Town through its watersheds?
We usually understand our city through suburbs, wards and municipal boundaries. But water reveals another geography: mountains, streams, rivers, wetlands, catchments and coastlines—all connected.
Writer and systems thinker Jeremy Lent invites us to recognise that we are not separate individuals living on the Earth, but participants in a living web of relationships. He speaks of nurturing “islands of coherence”: communities that embody a more connected and life-giving way of living, and whose influence can spread far beyond their immediate boundaries.
What might this mean for Cape Town’s faith communities?
Could parishes and churches become local islands of coherence—caring for the streams, wetlands, aquifers and coastlines within their own catchments, while building relationships with their upstream and downstream neighbours?
We have begun exploring this possibility by overlaying Cape Town’s water catchments with Catholic parish communities.

Our Season of Creation journey continues beyond individual events. These resources help us understand our watersheds, waterways and coastline — and offer practical ways to participate in their care.
Cape Town Beach Alerts — Check the latest sampling results and longer-term water-quality classification for Cape Town beaches and tidal pools. The new City platform also provides environmental alerts and allows users to follow favourite beaches.
Cape Town Beach Alerts. One important qualification: the results are based on samples and are not real-time measurements; conditions can change between sampling and publication, particularly after rainfall.
Liveable Urban Waterways — Explore the City’s programme to restore rivers, streams, wetlands and canals using nature-based solutions and water-sensitive design. Its aim is a water-sensitive Cape Town by 2040.
