COLLEGE REFORMS & TRAININGS, HED, PUNJAB
The promotion-linked training is defined as ‘preparing the potential candidate to handle more duties and responsibilities, thereby making him/her eligible for promotion to higher jobs in the organization’. In other words, it is the training given to the employees of an organization who are likely get promoted in the near future. Such training equips the trainees with knowledge and skills that they do not find any difficulties to shoulder the higher responsibilities of the new position to which they are going to be promoted.
The skills related to teamwork, the confidence and interpersonal abilities are the core elements utilised by teachers and educational managers in their jobs. Promotion-linked training programmes are much important in the scenario that the trainee teachers or managers are going to be awarded enhanced tasks after their promotions. Such training programmes provide circumstances to trainees where they may attain new knowledge and competencies in order to enhance job performance.[1] Their new task assignments (after promotion) are influenced by their skills, and that is why their prospects are affected by the training prior to promotion. Effective training initiatives offer benefits to the education system too, because employees increase their performance, professional commitment, promotability and become more open to new ideas.
Promotion-linked training also provides a prime opportunity to the education system to expand the knowledge base of all college teachers and managers. Although, employees attending such training programs also miss out on work time which may delay the completion of their assignments. However, training and development provides both the individual and the organizations as a whole with benefits that make the cost and time a worthwhile investment. The return on investment from training and development of college teachers is really a no matter.
In Punjab, both the School Education Department and the Higher Education Department invest a lot on the promotion-linked professional development of their teachers and managers, who - in return - develop skills and attitudes that help them to perform well and increase the productivity of the education system. Through promotion-linked trainings, the teachers and managers feel motivated and determined to reach at higher positions.
The benefits of promotion-linked trainings can be summarized as follows:
Improved employee performance – the teacher and managers who receive the mandatory promotion linked training are more able to perform in their jobs. The training gives them a greater understanding of their responsibilities within the assigned role, and in turn build their confidence. This confidence enhances their overall performance and benefits their colleges.
Improved employee satisfaction and morale – the investment in training by the HED make the teachers and managers feel that they are valued. The training creates a supportive workplace.
Addressing weaknesses – Most teachers and managers have some weaknesses in their workplace skills. A training program allows them to strengthen those skills. Such training programs provide a common platform to teachers and managers where they can share skills and knowledge. Providing promotion linked training creates an overall knowledgeable staff which can take higher level tasks, work in teams or work independently without constant help and supervision.
