Paul Goble
Our featured illustrator for September 2022 is Paul Goble, the celebrated author and artist whose work was inspired by his love for the indigenous people of the Dakota plains.
Goble was born September 27, 1933 in Haslemere, England. He had a life-long fascination with the native people of the American plains, cultivated by the stories his mother read to him. He made his first visit to the United States in 1959, and he would continue to visit America until he made it his home in 1977, settling in South Dakota. He became a U.S. citizen in 1984.
In 1979, Goble received the Caldecott Medal, America's most prestigious award for children's book illustration, for The Girl Who Loved Wild Horses.
Goble's work reflected his abiding interest in the aboriginal people of the Dakotas, and the Lakota and Yakima tribes adopted him as one of their own. He died in Rapid City, South Dakota on January 5, 2017.
We have a very small collection of books by Paul Goble, including the following titles:
Buffalo Woman: Story and Illustrations
The Girl Who Loved Wild Horses
The Boy & His Mud Horses & Other Stories from the Tipi
Adopted by the Eagles: A Plains Indian Story of Friendship and Treachery
allen say
Allen Say is our Illustrator of the Month for August 2022. Say is an accomplished author, but he has received the greatest recognition for his artwork. He is a past recipient of the most prestigious honor bestowed upon children's book illustrators, the Caldecott Medal, receiving the award in 1994 for Grandfather's Journey. He was a Caldecott honoree in 1989 for The Boy of the Three-Year Nap, written by Diane Snyder.
Born in Yokohama, Japan on August 28, 1937, Mr. Say moved frequently in his youth, fleeing with his mother in 1945 to his uncle's residence to escape the Allies World War II bombing campaign. Years later, after his parents' divorce, he emigrated to the United States, settling in Long Beach, California.
Mr. Say's teachers encouraged his artistry from an early age. He eventually apprenticed with Japanese post-war manga artist Noro Shinpei, who modeled a character after Say for his Demokurashee-chan comic strip. After high school, Say attended the Chouinard Art Institute and the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles. He studied architecture at the University of California at Berkeley.
Allen Say currently resides in Portland, Oregon, where he's lived since the late 1990s.
We have a small collection of books Say has either authored or illustrated, including the below titles. I encourage you to check them out this month.
