As an instructor, Files allows you to store files and assignments within Canvas. You can upload one or multiple files, view all details about your files, preview files, publish and unpublish files, set usage rights, and restrict access to files. Files is built with responsive design to adjust for browser scaling. The folder navigation window, file displays, and even file names adjust to the width of the browser window.

Did you know that you have a personal, private space in Canvas where you can view and manage all of the files that you have uploaded? To access your personal Canvas file storage area, click on Account (your profile picture) in the top left corner of Canvas, then click on the Files link.

You are trying to upload or attach a file somewhere in Canvas (perhaps a discussion in one of your courses), but you are getting an error message that indicates that you have exceeded your Canvas file storage quota. Not to worry! In your personal file storage area, you can delete any large files that you no longer need in order to free up file storage space.

Canvas Files functions similarly to the file storage on your computer, allowing you to create folders and subfolders. If you save all of your Module 1 materials to a folder titled Module 1, you will be able to track down those files more easily when you are ready to share them.

Yes, you can upload files directly to a module or in the Rich Content Editor (e.g., an assignment prompt or page). But when you need to upload revised versions of those files, continuing to upload files this way results in multiple copies of that file.

Trying to regain access to a previously generated canvas file. So far it seems I should never close one because there is no way to find them again within Obsidian or open them from without. Everything is treated as a .md file.

I was able to manipulate the info in the following link to do a dataviewjs to list the files in my canvas folder. The problem now is to get clicking the link to open in obsidian. But if you just want a list, this will work.

There are three types of Files you can access in Canvas: User Files, Course Files, and Group Files. User Files function like a flash drive and are a handy spot to keep your own personal files. This feature is available to instructors, TAs, and students. Course Files are the files that are added to your course site. Our course templates automatically make these course files available to only instructors and TAs by default. You will need to share course files with students through Modules or Pages (see below). Group Files are available to all members of a particular group.

We recommend making course-related files accessible to students via Modules or Pages. However, if you want to make some course files available to students via Course Files while keeping others hidden, then you will need to use Canvas's file restriction options. Ok. Except that my method for clicking on the zipped folder still works on the new laptop. It displays all the files including the sketchup model. I just click on the model and it has always opened before. Just not now. I have not installed any other extractor on the new laptop.

One interesting thing, I currently have Safari set not to extract zip files, as part of a test I was doing. When I downloaded the sample Canvas files they came directly as SKP. Otherwise I too was wondering whether OP was trying to open a ZIP file.

In files, subfolders cannot be deleted from the list of folders on the left-hand pane of the files menu. Instead, they must be selected from the list of files on the right-hand pane. To delete a file, you must open the overarching course folder and locate the subfolder within it.

I have two .root files including histograms. I got them from AIDA in geant4. For opening these files I need root.

I need to open these two files in one canvas in order to be able to compare them.

I am wondering should I write a c++ code for that or can I do it easily from the browser?

Currently, Canvas does not provide a way to make most content, such as files and folders, publicly viewable (that is, available on the web). However, you can make an entire course available to the public, and use it to share content; see How do I customize visibility options for a course? If you decide to use Canvas for this purpose, UITS recommends that you create a course separate from your regular instructional courses; see Create a new course site in Canvas.

To prevent access to content other than files in your publicly visible course, hide all remaining tools (with the exception of Home, which cannot be hidden); for instructions, see How do I manage Course Navigation links?

Additionally, if you want to hide your files but still permit access to them via link, you can either hide the Files tool altogether, or selectively adjust lock setting on individual files; for instructions, see How do I restrict files and folders to students in Canvas?

At CSU, User Files (students, instructors) have a quota of 200 MB. User files include profile pictures, uploaded assignment submissions, and other files uploaded to your personal Canvas file storage area.

Canvas stores only one instance of a file for CSU. When a file is copied to a new course by importing content, the files in the new course are linked to the originally uploaded file. The file only counts toward the course file quota in the course where it was originally uploaded.

Newly recorded or uploaded media via the Upload/Record Media link does not affect Canvas file quotas. However, media files uploaded via any other method (such as the Upload Files link) count toward the course quota

By default, the Files area is visible to students. Instructors can easily remove it from the student view of the course menu if desired.

Canvas users will find access to files (documents, images, media, etc.) in three different places:

Choosing to restrict access of folders or files to students only if they have the appropriate links means the folders or files will not display within the Files section of Canvas. However, students will be able to see the file or folder if the link to it is added to a Module, Canvas Page or elsewhere.

All your selected files should begin uploading into the Library. You can also add YouTube or Vimeo videos into your Library using the same method by adding a URL on the right area after clicking the Add button (it will embed them there for use; they will not be there as files).
