Wokmate Privacy Policy
Effective: 13 May 2026
This policy describes how the Wokmate mobile app (the "app") handles your information. Wokmate is an offline-first recipe app for Hong Kong households that helps employers share cooking instructions with their foreign domestic helper in the helper's language. The app is operated by an independent developer based in Hong Kong (see Contact at the bottom).
If you have questions about anything below, write to us — the email is at the bottom of the page.
1. What stays on your device
The following information is stored only on your phone, in the app's local storage:
Recipe favourites
Today's meal plan (the dishes you've picked for breakfast / lunch / dinner)
Weekly planner state
Shopping list (which items you've ticked off)
Language preference (employer language + helper language)
Dietary profile (vegetarian, halal, no pork, etc.)
Onboarding completion flag (so we don't show the tutorial twice)
Role selection (employer or helper)
We do not operate our own servers, and none of the data above leaves your device. If you uninstall the app, it is gone.
2. What is sent to third parties
The app uses three Google services that send limited, non-identifying data to Google's servers so the app can be free, can fix bugs quickly, and can be improved based on how it's used.
Google AdMob (banner advertising)
Wokmate displays banner ads via Google AdMob so the app can remain free. We have configured AdMob to serve non-personalized ads only — meaning AdMob is not allowed to use your behaviour or interests to target ads. When an ad loads, AdMob may collect:
A resettable advertising identifier (IDFA on iOS, Google Advertising ID on Android), used for fraud detection and frequency capping — NOT for behavioural targeting. On iOS, the IDFA is only available if you grant App Tracking Transparency permission (see §3).
Device model, operating system version, app language, time zone
Coarse geographic location (country / region only — never precise GPS)
The fact that an ad was viewed or tapped
For full detail, see Google's AdMob Privacy and Data Collection page.
Firebase Analytics (Google)
Wokmate uses Firebase Analytics to understand which recipes are popular, which features are used, and how often users return — without identifying individual users. The data we receive is anonymous and aggregate.
On first launch the SDK generates an anonymous installation identifier (called app_instance_id). This is a per-install random token. It is not tied to your Apple ID, Google account, email address, phone number, or any other personal information. We cannot use it to identify you.
Each event the app logs (for example, when a recipe is viewed or shared, when the planner is opened) is sent along with non-identifying parameters such as: recipe ID number, role (employer / helper), language preference, app version, device model, OS version, and coarse country / region.
We never log user-typed text — search queries, free-text notes, or anything you type — to Firebase.
Data is processed by Google Analytics 4 servers (located in the United States and Google's other data centres). For full detail, see Google's Firebase Privacy and Security page.
Firebase Crashlytics (Google)
If Wokmate crashes, Crashlytics automatically sends an anonymous crash report so we can fix the bug. The report contains:
The crash stack trace and exception details
App version, OS version, device model
Approximate time of crash
The anonymous installation identifier (same per-install random token as above)
No user-typed content is included, and no personal data such as your name, email, location, or contacts is included.
For full detail, see Google's Firebase Crashlytics Data Collection documentation.
3. App Tracking Transparency (iOS)
On iOS, the first time you launch Wokmate, the operating system shows a system-level prompt asking whether the app may "track your activity across other companies' apps and websites." This is Apple's standard App Tracking Transparency (ATT) prompt.
If you tap Allow, AdMob may use your IDFA for the purposes described in §2 (fraud detection, frequency capping).
If you tap Ask App Not to Track, AdMob will not use your IDFA. The app continues to work exactly the same — you'll still see banner ads, they may just be slightly less varied. None of the Firebase Analytics or Crashlytics functionality changes based on your ATT choice, because we don't use your IDFA for analytics or crash reporting.
You can change your answer at any time in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking.
4. What we don't do
To be clear about scope:
We do not sell your data to anyone.
We do not share your data with parties other than the Google services described in §2.
We do not require you to create an account or log in.
We do not collect your name, email, phone number, address, contacts, photos, microphone, camera, or location (beyond the coarse country / region that Google's services derive from your IP address).
We do not track you across other apps or websites.
We do not send marketing emails or push notifications (the app does not have a push messaging service).
5. Your choices
Uninstall the app: removes all locally stored data immediately.
Reset your advertising identifier: iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking → Reset Advertising Identifier (or the equivalent on Android).
Revoke ATT permission: iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking → toggle Wokmate off.
Opt out of Firebase Analytics: see Google's instructions at firebase.google.com/support/privacy — typically by using your device's "Limit Ad Tracking" or equivalent setting.
6. Children's privacy
Wokmate is intended for users aged 13 and older. We do not knowingly collect any information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has used the app, please contact us and we'll work with you to address the matter.
7. International data transfers
When the Google services described in §2 send data to Google's servers, that data may be processed in the United States, European Union, or other countries where Google operates data centres. By using the app, you understand and consent to this transfer.
8. Your rights under Hong Kong PDPO and other laws
If you are a Hong Kong resident, the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance gives you certain rights regarding personal data. Because Wokmate does not collect personal data that can identify you (see §1, §2, §4), most of these rights do not have practical effect for our app. However, you may still write to us with questions about our data practices, and we will respond.
If you are an EU / UK / California / other regional resident with privacy rights under your jurisdiction's law, the same principle applies: we will respond to good-faith inquiries.
9. Changes to this policy
If we update this policy in a way that affects what data is collected, we will update the Effective date at the top of this page. For material changes, we may also show a notice in the app on next launch.
