New. 12/24/24. Lake Committee Year End Report for 2024
New Lake Maintenance Company Selected
Lake & Pond Remediation, Inc. has been selected to provide maintenance services for our lakes once every quarter in 2025. They were chosen from 6 other companies and feedback from communities currently using them has been very positive. The BOD has approved the Pond & Lakes contract and they will conduct the first maintenance before the end of the year.
Lake Status
Park & North Lakes are both satisfactory. Clubhouse Lake has a heavy layer of duckweed on its surface which covers both sections. Lake & Pond has agreed to come on-site before the year-end to initiate corrective action. Thanks to Cat Carter for processing the contract amendment which includes this year-end visit.

4/24/24. We've experienced a major fish die-off in North Lake, due to an inversion of warm & cool water layers. During the Spring/Summer, the top layer of water becomes heated, reducing the oxygen level. Fish die-off may happen if an inversion occurs where the warm water layer drops & the cooler water moves to the surface. Fish become suffocated & float to the surface. This situation appears to be the cause of the North Lake fish die-off. Images here. Photos by Bill Kinley
1/10/23. Canterbury Lakes Resident Identification Program (See ID Card Image Above)
Last year, Canterbury Lakes signed an agreement with the Citrus County Sheriff's Office to periodically patrol our common area to arrest those individuals who are trespassing. Identifying Canterbury residents from trespassers will be more easily accomplished by providing residents with an ID card. The card may be carried in your wallet or lanyard & shown to the deputy when requested.. Residents receiving the card will be required to print their house number and street name on the back of the card. There is no cost for 3 cards or lanyard. Your name is not required on the card, only your resident address in Canterbury. IDs will be provided to residents at the Clubhouse and listed in the new telephone directory.. New residents will be provided IDs in the welcome package. IDs will be provided to current residents at the following dates/times:
Sa 1/13 11 am-2 pm
Mo 1/15 12 pm-2 pm
Th 1/18 2 pm-4 pm
Resident identification cards are not to be given to anyone who is not a resident of the Canterbury Lakes Estates Property Owners Association.. Questions? Contact Bill Kinley at wrk123@gmail.com
8/25/23 Solitude Maintenance Visit/Lake Status/Trespassing. Click to Expand Text
Solitude has completed the 3rd maintenance action on all our lakes; 1 maintenance visit remains for this calendar year's contract. Bacteria/dye were added to all lakes & they continue to be free from algae/invasive plants. Invoice may be paid for the 3rd visit on our contract for quarterly maintenance.
The aerator system for Park Lake is now operating thanks to the electrical repairs performed by Steve Carter. North lake aerators continue to operate without problems. A tree has fallen across the access road to Clubhouse Lake. Solitude poured the bacteria/dye from the bank of each lake section & it was evenly dispersed in the water bodies. Many thanks to Bob Knight for using his new WORX electric chainsaw to cut up the downed tree. Lake access is now open.
Trespassing incidents to our lakes have decreased; 2 incidents reported by the Sheriff's office since the Agent Agreement was put in place on April 23rd of this year. However, many other incidents have not been recorded. Discussion with the Sheriff office concluded that an ID of Canterbury residents would be quicker & more effective. Deputies currently use computerized street maps to define who are residents. A small 'business card' sized identification will be created/ordered to more quickly identify residents to the Deputy.
Three metal signs will also be procured & placed at access points to each lake:
NO TRESPASSING--Private Property
Canterbury Lakes Owners Only
Patrolled by Sheriff's Deputies

5/15/23. Lakes Update
5/8/23. Lakes Trespassing Reporting. An Agent Agreement has been approved: PR23-000398. This allows Sheriff deputies to enter Canterbury Lakes periodically & patrol the common property around our lakes. Deputies will enforce our No Trespassing signs. For deputy support the phone number to call is 352 726-1121. If a deputy is not available, a photo of the vehicle & license plate is key to documenting the trespass event.

Bill Houston Building the Berm for Electrical Box. 2023
With his usual grandeur & relaxed swimming style, Patrick has reclaimed his beach island sun spot. Attached is his personal photo for this year. He (or she) is the furthest you can be from the docks on Park Lake, being very shy & patiently waiting for the aerators to begin operation. You may be able to view his large tail stroke, as he silently moves along the far shore, returning to the nearby swamp area after completing his restful tanning for the day. It is rumored Patrick has a relative at home in North lake
The Lake Committee is proud to have Patrick as an honorary member. Support your lakes!

NEW 2/16/23. The rebuilding of the Park Lake aerator installation has begun. Bill Houston has repaired the access road, added stone/ground cloth to improve the boat launch, & built a small hill to mount the electrical meter/aerator cabinet. A cinder block column will be built behind the electrical meter to mount the aerator cabinet, providing over 2' clearance above the last high water level. The cabinet will be removable if the water level approaches this height.
We will use a local electrical contractor to make the final connections on the 'new' hill. County & Duke Power personnel will approve the installation before the power is reconnected at the top of the road by Duke. Hopefully, all 8 bottom aerators will function once the compressors are powered.
We're planning to have a Park Lake grounds cleanup on a Saturday in March; the date is to be chosen once the aerators are operating. The plan will be to clean the docks, remove brush & vines, & plant some cypress pines. The brush/debris will be piled for the contracted pickup in June. Finally, we'd like to reinstall a picnic table & another bench to encourage more use of the Park Lake area.
The fishing has been good & the weather is warming. Please take a walk down to the lake & enjoy our "Park'. The clubhouse key will open the lock on the gate and the last person leaving is responsible for relocking the gate.

8/30/22. Lake Update/New Initiative
Solitude completed the third maintenance visit of this year's contract.
Results were:
--Dye added to all lakes
--Duckweed/Alligator weed in Park Lake treated with herbicide
--Park Lake aerator cabinet opened & corrosion was evident in the compressor & electrical components due to water intrusion. Pictures were taken and recommendations will be made for returning the unit to full operation.
--North Lake aerator valve settings were changed to increase the pressure to the non-functioning
aerator location. This was successful in clearing airflow & all diffusers are now functioning.
Lake Committee explores a new service
The Committee has been researching a new opportunity to increase the value of the lake resources for the benefit of the Canterbury Lakes Community. Two candidates have been located, one each in North & Park Lake who could be trained for an exciting program to benefit our residents & provide a new revenue source. Questions/comments may be forwarded to the lake Committee, video is enclosed for more background

-- 6/13/22. Lakes Committee 2nd Quarter Report
Lake Status
Solitude completed 2nd quarter maintenance action; 2 more visits contracted:
-Applied dye in all lakes to impede algae/invasive plant growth
-High water prevented inspection of bottom aerators to determine cause of operating problems in Park/North Lakes. One fountain continues to operate in Clubhouse Lake
-Water clarity remains low in all lakes; estimate ~4' visibility
-Walking the edge of North/Clubhouse lakes revealed many Bluegill spawning beds and fish activity. Bass fishing reported good in North Lake
Assessment
Plan to reduce yearly maintenance costs (12 visits versus current 4 visits) is showing satisfactory results. In the future when bottom aerators are reactivated, the possibility of eliminating contracted maintenance is a goal. Lake committee members
applying dye/spot herbicide applications may be sufficient after bottom aerators are functioning in all lakes.
Future
We continue to be handicapped by high water which is preventing reactivating aerators in North/Park lake & planning for system installation in Clubhouse lake.
The Integrity of two fishing docks in Park Lake will need to be reviewed when water level drops further. Plans for North lake access are similarly on hold.

-- 1/14/22/ Our lake status changed as you can see in the link to photos. The water level continues to recede but the aerators in our lakes are still flooded/not operating, except in Clubhouse 1, fountain functioning 2 hours/day. Unfortunately, we've had an outbreak of Duckweed in Clubhouse (3) which requires herbicide application. The access road to the Clubhouse Lakes was flooded & the spreading of Duckweed wasn't initially noticed as we had closed the road. Lakes are numbered 1-4 starting with North Lake (1) & ending at Park Lake (4). I'd like to inspect /repair the aerators & spray the Duckweed in Clubhouse (3).
--1/1/22. Bill Mayfield & I did a circumnavigation of Park Lake last year and sprayed the 'beginnings' of Duckweed with herbicide. Last year the Ducktweed grew rapidly in the Spring & completely covered the lake, requiring our contractor to spray during 3 visits to remove the invasive plant.
There were separate small ponds in the woods that were covered with Duckweed (not connected to the lake) so we'll have to watch for any further spreading.
The water level is dropping & we observed the top of the aerator compressor cabinet. When the water drops another ~2', we'll be able to investigate the cause of the compressors stopping operation last Fall. After correcting the problem we'll then decide on how to elevate the compressor to avoid water intrusion in the future. Hopefully, we'll get started on this fix in late January.
Thanks to Bob Knight for the loan of his boat/oars to conduct the maintenance. The CLE boat is sunk, upside down, & attached to the boat rack making it unavailable for use.
Harris Floyd & I will conduct an inspection/herbicide spray of North Lake on Monday. Clubhouse lakes do not appear to require maintenance at this time
I plan to start negotiations with Solitude for a lake maintenance contract since our present contract ends in January.
Regards, Bill

The Lakes Committee had a good turn out for the clean up on March 13th. Thanks to Bill Kinley for organizing the work and all who helped.
Bill Kinley's Report
Saturday was a great morning at Park Lake. A 'whole bunch' of neighbors came together lending their muscle to: remove the brush, clean up the grounds, clear the shoreline near the docks, build a storage rack for the LakeWatch boat, and improve the gravel boat launch ramp. Come down & take a look!
People attending (best Guess!) were:
Bill/Connie Houston John Felice
Ted Langlois Joe Lee
Mike Pereau Norrie Stone
John Mesina John Madden
John McCormack John Bahrs
Mike Cook Cinde Dudley
Bill/Nancy Kinley George Pratt
Vicky /Steve Thayer Bill Mayfield
George Witgenzellner
We still have additional debris to remove, vines to take down, and some colorful plants to our 'Park.' A bench will be added to the shoreline under the oak tree between the docks for a restful overlook. How do you feel about adding a picnic table?
The Lake Committee will plan a similar cleanup at Clubhouse Lakes. We also plan to establish common access to North Lake.
Bill Kinley, Lake Committee
Thanks to the sharp-eyed & alert Lyn Floyd our lakes are now stocked with Gambusia affinis (Also known as mosquito fish) Lyn saw an article on Facebook that stated Citrus County Mosquito Control was stocking mosquito fish to reduce our mosquito population. Their favorite food is mosquito larvae which lower the population & reduce bites! (Skill is required in selecting the brightest fish to be added to the lake so they aren't eaten by the bigger fish.) Mosquitofish are small in comparison to other freshwater fish, with females reaching a maximum length of 2.8 in and males a maximum length of 1.6 in. Let's hope they have big appetites. Lake Committee.
Lake & Wetlands completed adding Black/Blue dye to all of our lakes yesterday. We are looking for two improvements: cosmetic, less green color more 'attractive' water & reduction in planktonic algae. The dye blocks some of the sunlight that is needed for continued algae growth but does not remove the nutrients that are encouraging algae growth. The dye will spread naturally in the lakes during the next week creating a uniform darker color. Lakes & Wetland maintenance report attached.
To lower the nutrient level, the Lake Committee is reviewing noninvasive aquatic plants that are attractive & will further reduce the planktonic algae. Herbicides are a quicker solution to eradicating algae/invasive plants but they increase muck (dead plants on the lake bottom)
which can result in oxygen depletion, impacting fish.
Monitoring our lakes is important; the lakes committee appreciates your thoughts & observations as changes can occur quickly in our lakes. Getting the best results at the lowest maintenance cost
continues to be our goal.
