I started with the 450d as well, and modded it myself. Just ripped (carefully) the filter window out. There are options. You can just pull the filter out completely, which is what I did. This will render the camera only usable for astro purposes. You can also replace the factory filter with one of several options. I opted to just remove it completely and then use a 2" UV/IR cut screw in filter. The removal is not too complicated, there are easy to follow illustrated guides online. You just have to be careful and clean, keep things in bags to avoid dust. It's paint by numbers really.
As for the warranty, it is non-transferable so the reciepts are not really necessary. You could always try and get warranty service with the original reciepts, but if canon noticed you may or may not find yourself in a spot of trouble.

While using my 450d the other day, the mode dial suddenly popped of when turning the camera off. The repair will probably cost more than buying a similar camera nowadays, so I want to try fixing it myself, but I'd like to know if anybody knows the right procedure to do so.
