Freestyle Judges License Information
Freestyle Skiing has had many developments in the past and continues to progress at a rapid pace. The judging community has documented a set of minimum requirements necessary to stay current and to participate at the various levels of competition.
These minimum requirements listed below, outlines a career pathway that provides the judges with the necessary training and experience to ensure transparency, accountability, fairness and high quality judges.
Domestic Judge Licenses - Minimum Requirements
Judges Electronic Passport
D License (Regional)
This is an entry level regional license established and certified by the Head Judge of the Province.
Level of Competition:
Regional Level Freestyle Events
Requirements for Certification:
Attend a regional judges’ clinic and/or fulfill any divisional requirements if applicable.
C Level (National)
This is a national level judge’s license established and certified by the Canadian Judges Advisory Group. Judges licensed at this level are certified for regional head judge assignments. It is highly recommended that judges at this level judge all disciplines – Moguls and Aerials.

Regional and Junior National Freestyle Events
Requirements for Certification:
To be considered certified as a C level judge, each judge must satisfy the following requirements:
Attend one approved judges’ clinic in the current or prior year. Clinic attended may include a local or FIS B level clinic.
Must judge at least 5 events per discipline.
Must have the recommendation from their respective regional judges’ chair.
Recommendations from regional judges’ chairs should be sent in writing to the Canadian Judges Advisory Group in the fall prior to the start of the competition season.
International (FIS) Judge Licenses - Minimum Requirements
B Level - FIS (International License)
This is an international level judge’s license established and certified by FIS - the International Ski Federation.
Level of Competition:
Competitions available to C & D licenses as well as:
Continental Cups – NorAm and Europa
University Games
Junior World Championships
Other FIS sanctioned events such as Canadian Selections and Canadian Championships that do not require the highest skilled judges.
Requirements for Certification:
To be considered certified as a B level judge, each judge must satisfy the following requirements:
Two seasons as a nationally licensed judge.
Eight (8) individual competitions, per discipline (a competition is defined as a men’s and women’s day event). For a moguls upgrade, there must be a minimum of eight (8) singles format events with a minimum of at least four (4) judging assignment as a turns judge and four (4) assignments as an air judge. A duals event that includes a single-format qualification can be counted as a single mogul event, but cannot be counted as two separate events. For aerials (on snow & water ramp), judges must judge all events as an overall judge. At a minimum, five (5) events must be on snow competitions.
Attend two (2) FIS judge’s clinics and send in test scores for both clinics. One of the clinics must be no more than one year prior to the upgrade request.
Attendance and passing of a Judges Mentoring and Evaluation program (A or B level comp.) or an International Assist program no more than one year prior to the upgrade request.
Recommendation from National Association and approval by the appropriate FIS Working Group and Committees.
Applications are done at the Proctor meeting and the approval is done during FIS biannual meetings.
Recommendations for upgrades must come from Freestyle Canada to FIS by May 1st in the year the judge is requesting an upgrade.
A Level - FIS (International License)
This is an international level judge’s license established and certified by FIS - the International Ski Federation.
Level of Competition:
Competitions available to B, C & D licenses as well as:
World Cup
World Championships
Olympic Games
Requirements for Certification:
To be considered certified as an A level judge, each judge must satisfy the following requirements:
Two seasons as an internationally licensed judge.
Six (6) individual competitions, per discipline (a competition is defined as a men’s and women’s day event). For a moguls upgrade, there must be a minimum of six (6) singles format events with at least three (3) judging assignment as a turns judge and three (3) assignments as an air judge. A duals event that includes a single-format qualification can be counted as a single mogul event, but can’t cannot be counted as two separate events.
Four (4) individual aerial competitions (on snow & water ramp) as an overall judge. A minimum of three events must be on snow competitions.
Attend and pass two (2) FIS judges clinics since receiving B license (including tests). It is strongly recommended that a judge seeking an upgrade in the coming season should notify the proctors at the start of the clinic.
Attendance and passing of a Judges mentoring and evaluation program or an International Assist program (at an A level competition) no more than one year prior to the upgrade request. Test scores to be submitted by the proctor.
Recommendation from National Association and approval by the appropriate FIS Working Group and Committees.
