Dates:
Middle School June 6-8
High School June 16-18
Location: 8155 Dawn Rd SW, Sherrodsville, OH 44675
This is in a rather remote and rural area.
Some cell services do not work. ATT is notoriously bad
Departure and arrival:
We will depart at 8:00 on the first day listed.
We will be taking a school bus to accommodate the number athletes and luggage
The last day of camp has a tournament- so the exact time of arrival back in Canfield is unknown but you can anticipate 2:30 ish. I will GroupMe when we leave so you have about a 90 min notice.
Housing:
Our team will be issued a team house.
This house usually sleeps 30+ .
For MIDDLE SCHOOL CAMP- A coach will sleep and be present in the dorm at night. I know that was an area of concern for some.
Please bring bedding (sheets, pillows, etc).
WARNING: This is not a Hilton.
Depending on the weather you may want to bring a fan.
Food:
Athletes will be fed in the cafeteria for Lunch and dinner day 1, All three day 2 and breakfast and lunch on day 3.
WARNING: This is not Aqua Pazzo or your favorite Youngstown Eatery.
Most kids bring additional snacks and extra drinks. I highly recommend the extra drinks. .
I usually make an ice and water run daily
Mission: This trip is for the purpose of chemistry, team bonding and toughness.
Chemistry/team bonding- I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH…
There is a zero tolerance for any BULLYING or HAZING, extreme pranks, excessive teasing, or vandalism.
While a coach (Middle School) will be in the dorms at night, coaches do not have eyes on every kid every minute. In between games and sessions kids can go back to the room or watch other Canfield teams. They eat on their own schedule as each team sees fit
We do give freedom to float around camp and kids are responsible for being at game times. The format and scheduling of camp makes it impossible to eat as a whole program.
I honestly doubt we have any issues, given the fact our young kids have been raised so well.
There is certainly a line between “the boys will be boys” and inappropriate behavior.
They should have fun. They should enjoy themselves- but this camp is about chemistry
Toughness:
It's a lot of basketball. I MEAN A LOT.
They will play outside in the sun on the blacktop and you will also play inside.
There are no officials. There never have been at this camp- and there never will be.
It's physical (in a good way) and kids have to learn how to play though.
Between the elements (heat), the physical play and fatigue kids learn how to push through and manage negativity.
Lastly, and this is very personal for me. Since 1993, I have only missed camp one year. I have a longstanding relationship with the Huggins family- both Bob and his brother Larry, who runs the camp. Both have been very very good to me personally, and Canfield over the years. Our reputation there is excellent. My expectation is that we are gentlemen at all times- to the camp workers, to the kitchen ladies, etc. While I want our guys to enjoy themselves and the game- this is a business trip that reflects on our program, school and community.
