This Just In's Candy Double rushes to get the scoop to waiting fans before the DDC's Abigail Trinity beats her out to capture this breaking headline!
With bullets flying, security elements of the Candy Corps faced off against legions of Bakunin remotes, each side fighting to get their Warcors in to this highly contested point of interest in New Hypatia.
Mainstream news would have the people believe that the sports stadium is a staging area for humanitarian aid, while eyewitness accounts report militia forces gathering to gain superiority over the region.
Locals report that the Rogue AI, BRUTUS, has taken control of major portions of the city and its infrastructure - though this information is speculative at best. The very existence of this AI has not been confirmed in mainstream circles, and there is a widespread misinformation campaign to prevent knowledge of this AI's existence from reaching dissemination throughout the human sphere.
Today, these two zealous news agencies rush to get this all-important seed of information to the masses so as to expose this potential threat to the safety of both Maya and Arachne users!
Our game begins with a setup intending to evoke a sports stadium ground hastily converted to a staging zone for militia operations. The Commanche Outpost terrain from Warsenal seemed like a good call, and the current state of the individual pieces (silver primed) felt a bit reminiscent of stadium bleachers. This definitely felt quite appropriate for our matchup of "Breaking News!" at the Caligo Hexadrome!
We start with an initiative roll-off. Haqqislam wins the roll with a 6 while Bakunin loses on an 18.
Haqqislam opts to take initiative, and is made to deploy first.
Bakunin chooses a side which has ease of access to the center of the field, as well as a fantastic selection of cover in the deployment zone. The picnic area with two tables provides fantastic cover for seizing two of the three panoplies. Haqqislam's side is highlighted in red, while Bakunin's is highlighted in Blue, and the Panoplies are emphasized in Orange.
Haqqislam deploys with two Ghazi Muttawi'ah ready to jam any warcor heading in to interview the HVT, and an aggressive position for the bonus warcor (my Candy Double model) - aiming to take advantage of the inability of the opponent to use lethal force against her. The Nazarova twins are in position to roar forward under smokescreen cover, and a Fiday is held in reserve.
Three Ragik Hackers are off the table, ready to drop in and make a Nomad opponent miserable.
Bakunin deploys with a Haris of the Reverends and the Tsyklon, ready to take advantage of the +1 Burst in an aggressive fashion. Zoe is dug into the corner, attached to both π-well and a zondbot. Further, she's protected by the Chimera and Pupniks. Two Zeros are in infiltration as camo markers ready to seize items from the panoplies. The bonus Warcor is positioned to the right side, ready to utilize the protection from lethal force in order to achieve the special objectives. A Meteor Zond is off table, ready to create trouble at some point in the turn.
Haqqislam deploys a Fiday in a position that threatens both the Chimera and Zoe - a bold gambit that could prove disastrous for the Nomad forces.
HAQQISLAM HAS TOP OF TURN 1
Bakunin spends one command token to strip two orders from the Haqqislam group one.
Impetuous phase begins with Zamira moving forward, attempting to throw a smoke grenade over the Asawira / Rafiq duo. She fails.
Zuleyka spends her impetuous order to move forward and throw smoke, allowing the two Muttawi'ahs to move forward as well - ready to jam the Warcor if she pushes forward.
Normal order expenditure begins with the Hassassin Fiday boldly attacking his dual quarry. Surprisingly, he manages to render both targets unconscious with light shotgun templates. He makes an armor save against a nanopulser but ends up in targeted state.
Zamira attempts to continue moving forward with her irregular order, in hopes of dealing with the Tsyklon under cover of smoke. She fails her second attempt and I attempt two more times using the Muttawi'ah irregular orders. The fourth attempt is successful... my opponent decrees that "Fourth time's the charm!"
I use Zuleyka's irregular order to rush forward through the center section of terrain in order to cover the advance of the Asawira duo. Her smoke goes off, but she ends up taking two flash pulse hits, rendering her stunned for the remainder of the turn.
I attempt to drop in a Ragik behind the terrain where Zoe and the Chimera once stood vigilant. I fail.
I attempt to drop in a Ragik in the same spot as the last attempt. I fail again.
I attempt to drop in a Ragik once more in the same spot. This one is successful, and is outside of ZoC of any of the surviving units.
The Ragik moves towards the Reverends, attacking with a double shotgun template. The blast kills the Moira but the Custodier survives. The Tsyklon misses.
Wanting the last hacker incapacitated, I push forward again - this time opting to hack the Custodier with Oblivion. My Ragik rolls two eighteens and fails both attacks, and bites the dust to the Tsyklon's Feurbach.
I move the Fiday forward in a desperate attempt to shoot at the Custodier who opts to dodge - she escapes my attack and the Fiday dies to the fury of the Tsyklon's heavy weapon.
Absolutely needing the Custodier Hacker off the table (though I didn't know it was the Lieutenant at this time), I push my Rafiq up using its tactical awareness order, slingshotting the Asawira towards an angle to shoot the quarry.
Asawira plays its Lieutenant Order, swinging out around the corner and back, shooting at the Custodier. Despite the mimetism malus, I manage to take her out.
BAKUNIN HAS BOTTOM OF TURN 1
Bakunin forces begin turn in Loss of Lieutenant
Impetuous order is bypassed in favor of survival
Zero swings out to attempt to eliminate one of the Ghazi Muttawi'ahs, her combi rifle faces off against a WIP fifteen jammer. The jammer wins, but the Zero passes BTS. This desperate move is in attempt to play the mission, and draws the ire of my Shihab total reaction HMG - who misses with three out of four shots, though the last one is just enough. The zero rolls a total armor save of fifteen and falls unconscious, needing a sixteen.
The special Warcor moves forward into jammer range, opting to continue moving forward and risking the jammer hit - she passes the BTS save.
Emboldened, my opponent uses a command token to convert an irregular into a regular order and moves into contact with the HVT. She attempts to interview the civilian but fails the roll.
Agressively pushing for the mission, the warcor uses one more command token and an irregular order to attempt once more interview the HVT. Knowing she's safe from lethal force, this bold attempt results in a successful "interview" special objective. (It's worth mentioning that lore-wise, Abigail Trinity succeeded in getting the scoop for the DDC Press Corps before Candy Double!)
The Tsyklon moves forward to engage the Rafiq, we shoot at each other and everything misses.
Bakunin command brings in a Meteor Zond behind both the Asawira and Zamira, creating a nightmare of an ARO situation. Neither sees nor is able to change their facing, owing to some bad physique rolls.
An aggressive push with the Lunokhod follows, as Bakunin forces would like the repeater removed. It successfully kills the Rafiq but suffers multiple AROs! One Ragik fails to hit with carbonite while another Ragik successfully hits with Oblivion. Candy herself throws a flash pulse, hitting the target. Zuleyka also throws in a flamer template. The Lunokhod nearly survives, shrugging off all of the communications damage with successful BTS saves, but succumbing to the flamer into unconscious one state.
Finally, the Zero near Candy rushes forward. My special Warcor opts to dodge forward while the Zero places a deployable.
Using another command token, my opponent moves the Zero again towards the panoply. Overconfident and ill-informed, I opt to fire a flash pulse at the Zero, thinking that this is a lethal weapon to secure my victory. I am mistaken, and the E/M mine leaves Candy in an isolated state. The Zero fails her BTS saves and is now stunned. Unfortunately, she also failed to draw an item from the panoply!
HAQQISLAM HAS TOP OF TURN 2
I elect to skip the impetuous phase entirely, owing to too many dangerous ARO situations.
My nearest Ragik moves towards the problematic Meteor Zond behind my lieutenant. His first attempt to carbonite the remote fails, but a second attempt is successful and the robot stops moving.
Now free of ARO danger, the Asawria steps out towards the opponent's side of the table and picks a fight with the Tsyklon. The weight of dice proves to be enough despite the inability to take cover in his frenzied state. The Tsyklon is hit and goes down.
I spend several orders continuing to move the Asawira forward into the opponent's deployment zone, hoping to set up for the special "we are in control" objective.
Using my non-special Warcor, I move up and successfully flash pulse the enemy warcor watching my advance.
Now free to move into position, the warcor moves up again - just enough to see the Asawira, and spots the friendly troop in the enemy deployment zone - scoring "we are in control".
BAKUNIN HAS BOTTOM OF TURN 2
Bakunin command starts turn 2 by moving the special Warcor forward and into my deployment zone. Her immunity to lethal deterrent is strong, and allows her to get into position.
Following up with the mission plan, the other Warcor moves up far enough to see the special attaché, she rolls a discover and succeeds, scoring the special objective"we are in control".
Seeing an opportunity to weaken my ability to engage in journalism, the Moderator stands up and shoots at my non-special Warcor, killing her. This action was done under the watchful eye of my Djanbazan sniper, who cleanly takes the head off of the Moderator.
Hoping to inflict Loss of Lieutenant on me, the Morlock stands up and fires a full burst of assault pistol shots at the Asawira, winning the face-to-face against a dodge attempt and inflicting one wound on my commander.
HAQQISLAM HAS TOP OF TURN 3
I begin my turn with the nearby Ghazi Muttawi'ah's impetuous order, advancing towards the warcor and attempting to jam it. I fail.
Undaunted, I move the same unit again using its irregular order and attempt the same attack with my Jammer, and fail. I am unable to shut down the attaché Warcor's ability to receive orders with this weapon, and it is now unloaded.
I spend an order on my engineer in an attempt to lock the Warcor down in CC using my Nasmat so I can move my Engineer towards Candy and fix her broken communications device. The enemy Warcor manages to dodge out of CC.
Once more, I attempt the same thing - I need to fix my own Warcor in order to score "interview". The Najjarun engineer moves forward, as does the Nasmat. Again, the enemy Warcor manages to dodge away, this time into position to see my engineer's intended path of travel.
Now left with no good options due to order count, I brazenly walk the Najjarun forward in a frantic attempt to reach my own journalist. I get flash pulsed and fail the BTS save.
Finally, I use Candy's isolated order in an attempt to reset out of isolation. The attempt fails. I cannot score any more points and I pass the turn.
BAKUNIN HAS BOTTOM OF TURN 3
The Nomad Warcor sights an unconscious enemy model, and passes a WIP roll against it. Bakunin scores the special "propaganda" objective.
The Vertigo Zond stands up and sees the Asawira, who declares dodge. It fires a missile. The Asawira is vaporized.
