There are 3 common types of notarial services which are:
Acknowledgment - The purpose of an acknowledgement is to declare that you have willingly signed a document.
Jurat - The purpose of a jurat is for you to swear or affirm that the contents of the document are true
Copy Certification - The purpose of a certified copy is to have the notary confirm that the copy is an exact match of the original. This is not allowed in all states.
If you are not sure what kind of notarization you need, you will need to contact the document drafter or receiving agency to confirm what notarial act they require before you schedule your appointment with a Notary Public. If in doubt contact a lawyer for guidance.
As the signer, you are responsible for telling the notary what type of notarization you need. Notaries can describe what the common notarial acts are but they cannot recommend one over another. It is illegal for a Notary Public to advise the signer on what type of notarization is needed, unless they are also a licensed attorney. I am not a licensed attorney.
