These records come from the parish of San Giovanni Battista which was part of the town of San Martino Canavese until 1929 when it became a hamlet of Castellamonte. (Via Centrale, 1 – Loc. San Giovanni Canavese, Castellamonte) San Martino Canavese has a rich heritage of churches: 9 buildings (there were 11 in the 19th century), which attest to the deep religiosity rooted in the population, especially in the past centuries. With a growing population a new church was needed in the late 18th century and so on January 24, 1787, the then bishop of Ivrea, Monsignor Giuseppe Ottavio Pochettini, proclaimed the erection of the small church that had the title of San Giovanni Battista (the one we have news of since the early 1600s) into a Parish. Don Francesco Roppolo from San Martino was appointed provost of the new parish.
Indepth research about the town has also been conducted by Professor Marinella Bersano who is a course director at Unitre Castellamonte, she has written an article in Terramia about the town.
Terramia is a 'notebook' containing research, studies and promotion of the archaeological, historical, environmental and cultural heritage of Castellamonte and Canavese.
The edition published in November 2012 contains the article about the town and its history, view the original article and the english translation below.
An interesting blog from Sally McKenzie Travel contains some pictures of the town as well as of the cemetery.
