Paint.net (stylized as Paint.NET or paint.net) is a freeware general-purpose raster graphics editor program for Microsoft Windows, developed originally on .NET Framework, and as of version 4.3 .NET. Paint.net was originally created by Rick Brewster as a Washington State University student project,[3] and has evolved from a simple replacement for the Microsoft Paint program into a program for editing mainly graphics, with support for plugins.
Paint.net originated as a computer science senior design project during spring 2004 at Washington State University. Version 1.0 consisted of 36,000 lines of code and was written in fifteen weeks.[4] In contrast, version 3.35 has approximately 162,000 lines of code. The paint.net project continued over the summer and into the autumn 2004 semester for both the version 1.1 and 2.0 releases.

Starting with version 4.0.18, paint.net is published in two editions: A classic edition remains freeware, similar to all other versions since 3.5. Another edition, however, is published to Microsoft Store under a trialware license and is available to purchase for US$7. According to the developer, this was done to enable the users to contribute to the development with more convenience, even though the old avenue of donation was not closed.[10][11]
Paint.net supports plugins, which add image adjustments, effects, and support for additional file types. They can be programmed using any .NET Framework programming language, though they are most commonly written in C#.[13] These are created by volunteer coders on the program's discussion board, the paint.net Forum. Though most are simply published via the discussion board, some have been included with a later release of the program. For instance, a DirectDraw Surface file type plugin, (originally by Dean Ashton) and an Ink Sketch and Soften Portrait effect (originally by David Issel) were added to Paint.net in version 3.10.[citation needed]
Hello, in this tutorial I want to show you a technique that I call Gradient Blending. I will be using gradient blending to blend the object of one image into another image. There are several ways of blending pictures, merging pictures, combining pictures, merging objects, other image manipulation techniques, etc, and this technique using the gradient tool is one of them.
I've tried to write this tutorial in a way that is aimed at paint.net beginners. If you have suggestions for this tutorial, or suggestions on how I might do future tutorials, please send all suggestions through a personal message (pm).
If you have any questions about any of the steps, need help, or want to share your blended pictures, feel free to ask anything or share in the comments area below.
Sorry I have to rant for a quick moment. Why does paint.net keep logging me off every 30 minutes and then my password does not work? then i reset my password to the same password I already had???? then I am able to get back in with the same password that I reset each time? what the!!!??? sorry , very frustrating...
Nah, I'm also encountering same issue in 4.3.12.
If you open many images (min. 5 in my cases), either file size is big or dimension is large, the first image will always be unable to use select rectangle tool.
Moreover, if you go to edit the last image you put into paint.net and save, then return to the beginning page, there are high chance that this situation will reoccur.
This section is for publishing tutorials and subsequent discussion of those tutorials. This section is not for tutorial requests or other general questions - please post these in paint.net General Discussion forum.
If you found a bug in paint.net, please tell us about it. Include your pdncrash.log file (on your Desktop) if relevant. This section is not for plugin errors. If you have a problem with a plugin, post in that plugin's thread in the plugin forum.
This is my first tutorial, and yes, I'm a newbie to the forum, but I've been fooling around with paint.net for a couple of years now, and I check the forum regularly even though I've just now become a member! So, on with it now.
Great work and while I hasited to buy at first, I though about the usage of paint.net all along my professional career. Bought it! I want to support paint.net and in gerneral so a positive example of a successful store app. I hope you share the progress and success of the store version. Here in germany you already have a 100% 5 star rating with 9 (including mine) super positive reviews!
Update There's an update for paint.net v4.1+ that includes an installer. There are a lot of things that come with the installer, make sure you only check the options you want. Also, make sure you download the plugin version that corresponds with your paint.net version. (it's pretty obvious from the forum post) 2351a5e196
