We offer a Soup Kitchen with weekday breakfasts and daily lunch meals; a Day Shelter with cots, computers, phones, and staff counselors; a winter season Night Shelter for men, and numerous assistance programs such as showers, lockers, mail delivery, laundry cards, vouchers for photo IDs, clothing, and other personal hygiene items.

Our approach has been successful, and demand for our programs has continued to surge. In 2022, the Day Shelter registered 18,982 with 979 unique visits totaling 30,068 total visits annually. This was an increase from 42 visits daily in January to 92 visits daily in December. The Night Shelter opened one month early in November, and it fills to its 35-person capacity each night.

The Soup Kitchen fed 30,000 guests in 2022. On average, 60-75 people arrived for weekday breakfast meals, and 70-100 came daily for lunch. We continue to be the only location in Harrisburg that offers indoor dining for meals to hungry, homeless individuals.

The shelter team worked with her daily for more than 5 months. Julie received shelter, meals, clothing, showers, and personalized counseling that connected her with other community resources for medical attention and housing programs. When a space in an assisted living home was secured for her, she refused it for an unknown reason.

Staying in the shelter during the day and overnight, Jeffrey checks in with staff daily to stay committed to his plan to change. Since reading and writing are a challenge for him, our Client Counselor fills out Social Security forms with him. Two 10-page forms took two hours to complete. Changing habits and getting help takes time, patience, and persistence. We are here for him while he continues this journey.

Our Lady of Presentation Communities and Ministries is the full title given to a seven-year-old Catholic organization in March, 1992, when it received the status of Lay Association under canon law by Archbishop Pilarczyk of Cincinnati, Ohio. The two components, ministries and home-based communities, exist to disciple Catholics more deeply for Christ, through teaching the word of God and equipping all for Christian ministry using the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Teachings on the daily eucharistic readings, and encouragement to receive Jesus in daily Holy Communion are emphasized to such an extent that one could cite a secondary influence in the Church as a "daily Mass movement."

Our Daily Bread is committed to planting seeds of hope daily for individuals experiencing hunger in Baltimore City, and helping them improve their lives. Access to healthy food is a human right, and providing it is a collective responsibility. Satisfying this need requires sustained commitment and dedication from countless staff and volunteers, and support from the community. We all play an integral part.

Our guests come to us for food, but they are also hungry for opportunity. The meal is an invitation. What comes after that is access to many other resources to help them get on a path to a better life. Breaking bread together is the first step along the path to trust and connection, so they can find employment, overcome addiction, and more.

Since its inception, Our Daily Bread Soup Kitchen, Inc. has provided a daily meal to meet the nutritional needs of those less fortunate or who have fallen on hard times. Due to the rise in unemployment and the overall economic climate, the numbers of those being served has taken a sharp increase. In 2019, the number of residents fed daily took on a fifty percent increase. In recent years, the numbers peaked to more than 20,000 meals served annually. Nationwide, America has seen not only a rise in homelessness and unemployment but an increase of those who are hungry also. Our Daily Bread has aimed its task at providing at least one nutrition filled meal a day.

This simple bread can be made every day. The dough can easily be turned into rolls or bread sticks, as well.

You can make this bread dough in a number of different ways. The simplest is in a food processor using the plastic dough blade. You can also use a mixer or bread machine, or mix the dough by hand. However you do it, your goal is a smooth dough that's quite soft; please see "tips," below, for guidance on how much flour to use depending on what season of the year it is.

To make the dough using a bread machine: Put all the ingredients into the machine, program it for basic white bread, and let the machine go through its first knead (25 minutes or so). Cancel the cycle, and turn off the machine. Let the dough rest for 8 to 10 hours, right in the machine.

Once the dough has risen, take it out of the bowl and make it into whatever you want. You'll have enough dough to make 8 rolls; 8 chewy, substantial bread sticks; 1 Italian-style loaf or baguette; 1 round loaf, or a 12" focaccia.

Because flour absorbs moisture from the air, and the air is moister in summer than winter, the amount of flour you'll need in your bread recipes will be less in winter, more in summer. In this recipe, you'll need about 2 1/4 cups (270g) flour in the winter, 2 3/4 cups (330g) in the summer, and 2 1/2 cups (300g) in the spring or fall.

Though I suffered then, as I look back now, I am grateful that there was not a quick solution to my problem. The fact that I was forced to turn to God for help almost daily over an extended period of years taught me truly how to pray and get answers to prayer and taught me in a very practical way to have faith in God. I came to know my Savior and my Heavenly Father in a way and to a degree that might not have happened otherwise or that might have taken me much longer to achieve. I learned that daily bread is a precious commodity. I learned that manna today can be as real as the physical manna of biblical history. I learned to trust in the Lord with all my heart. I learned to walk with Him day by day.

Asking God for our daily bread, rather than our weekly, monthly, or yearly bread, is also a way to focus us on the smaller, more manageable bits of a problem. To deal with something very big, we may need to work at it in small, daily bites. Sometimes all we can handle is one day (or even just part of one day) at a time. Let me give you a nonscriptural example.

A little over a year ago, Elder David A. Bednar spoke about consistency in simple daily practices such as family prayer, scripture study, and home evenings as being crucial in building successful families. Consistent effort in seemingly small, daily steps is a key principle in achieving any great work, including progress in the pathway of discipleship. As an object lesson, Elder Bednar compared daily acts to individual brushstrokes in a painting that together, over time, produce a work of art. He said:

We must not lose hope. Hope is an anchor to the souls of men. Satan would have us cast away that anchor. In this way he can bring discouragement and surrender. But we must not lose hope.
