During my 2023-2024 sophomore junior season I started experiencing pain in my left quad. The school trainers believed it was a strain, but after I sat out for a week and the pain got worse they told me to go to an orthopedic. They thought I slightly tore my quad.
At the orthopedic he didn't think it was a tear or strain, but he wanted me to get a MRI since there was a lump and my leg was weaker; I was unable to hold it up and flex on its own.
Got an MRI (see above), my orthopedic doctor believed I had a bone cyst in my right femur. I was scheduled to get a biopsy and a metal rod through my femur (same thing doctors do for a broken femur) on April 1st 2024.
Of course, April 1st=April Fools Day. The surgeon did a biopsy and found the cyst was actually a non-cancerous tumor. The medical term is an Enchondroma tumor. Fun fact, only 2% of people are likely to get a Enchondroma bone tumor. The surgeon decided to go a new route.
2 weeks later on April 21st, 2024 I got my 2nd surgery. My surgeon removed the fragment of my femur that the bone tumor was located, and replaced it with doner bone, cadaver bone, and a mix of a paste. I also got a metal plate and screw. Here is a picture of my leg post surgery!
Here is a picture of my scar about 2 weeks post op! I was on crutches for about a month. I started PT as soon as I was cleared to walk. I did PT up until mid July, where I was cleared to do my exercises on my own. I slowly started getting my ball work and foot skills back, and evening out my muscles,
In July, we went on a lake trip to my lake house. I went tubing behind the boat, and flung off. Suddenly I felt a sharp pain throughout my whole leg. Honestly, I believed I fractured or broke my femur. We booked a doctors appointment and they believed it was a meniscal tear, but since I had a plate we couldn't get a clear MRI. I got my third surgery, where the surgeon went in with a scope. He only found that my cartilage was messed up and no tears!
Started PT again in August, but for some reason my leg would not stop hurting. When school started and we did soccer drills, the pain felt the same as it did before all the surgeries in my femur. We decided to go back to the doctor in October, and my surgeon told me my body might be rejecting the plate, which is why it is so painful. Here is an x-ray of my femur post surgery!
I got officially cleared for contact on January 7th, 2025.
Here is me playing my first full game back, in a showcase with my club team on anuary 18th, 2025. since then I have had no pain and I was able to bring back all of my muscle strength and increase it! My speed and ball skills have also improved from my hard work.
