Meet the Counselors
Program Director: Shannon Acap
Shannon is an elementary school teacher in San Antonio. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies and a Master’s in Elementary Education. She is certified to teach grades EC-6 in Texas and K-8 in Arizona. Shannon worked for the Child Development Programs at Yokota AFB in Japan and Langley AFB in Virginia from 2000-2006. This will be her sixth year with EWA Summer Camp. Shannon is a member of the Texas Council of Teachers of Math, the Association of Texas Professional Educators, and the American Camp Association.
Camp Director: Jacob Derby
Jacob is a graduate of O’Connor High School in San Antonio, Texas where he was active in Future Farmers of America (FFA) and Technical Theater with a specialization in Audio Production. He attends Northwest Vista College in San Antonio, majoring in Sound and Audio Production and will be simultaneously pursuing an Audio Technology certification though a local audio production studio in the fall of 2016. This will be Jacob's third year with Camp Wakaba. His experience with children includes working with local elementary students at FFA presentations and working as a counselor at a local gym. Jacob is a musician, playing multiple instruments as well as producing and mixing original music. He hopes to eventually own his own studio where he assists and produces for local musicians.
Camp Director: Son Nguyen
Son is a graduate of University of Texas at San Antonio and is currently pursuing a career in Pediatric Physical Therapy. He works as a soccer coach in Austin for kids ages 3 to 8 and he is also a certified American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor. This will be Son’s fourth year at Camp Wakaba. He has been volunteering and working with children at St. David’s Round Rock Medical Center for two years. When not working, he likes to paint, go swimming, stand-up paddling, travel and try out bizarre foods. He is a member of the American Camp Association.
Camp Director: Barbara Haines
Barbara feels so privileged and excited to return for the 4th consecutive EWA summer camp with Camp Wakaba! She is a former elementary school teacher and has a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration/Marketing and Post-Baccalaureate certification in Early Childhood Education from the University of Texas in San Antonio. Barbara has strong military ties, growing up in a military family and having worked at United Services Automobile Association (USAA), an insurance and financial services company proudly serving the military community. During that time, she volunteered as a mentor and Junior Achievement consultant to students in at-risk schools. She has served as coach/assistant coach in YMCA sports programs. Barbara is an associate member of the Jolly Joeys Clown Alley, helping clowns spread joy and laughter to children, adults, and the military community at parades and charitable events. Barbara lives in San Antonio with her husband of 30 years and has two adult children. She LOVES music — dancing and singing karaoke (and camp songs)! She can’t wait to welcome back returning campers and meet all the new ones!
Counselor: Raeanna Flores
Raeanna happily lives in San Antonio, TX. This will be her second year at Camp Wakaba. Raeanna is an elementary school teacher at Fernandez Elementary. She has a Bachelors degree from Texas A&M University. Raeanna loves teaching kindergarten and is always learning something new from her students. On her days off, she enjoys walking the famous Riverwalk and eating chicken enchiladas.
Counselor: Aaron Klein
Aaron is a senior at the University of Oregon studying Economics and Pre-Law. His dream is to become an investment lawyer. He works for a ski shop and he teaches violin lessons to beginning and advanced students. Aaron plays professional violin for the Eugene Ballet and the Shedd Institute as the resident violinist. In the summers, he teaches art history for a local art institute. On his free time, he skis on the local mountains.
Counselor: Kayleigh Ethridge
Kayleigh is from San Antonio, Texas. She graduated from Texas State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies. She is certified to teach Kindergarten - Sixth grade. She currently is completing her third year teaching Kindergarten. Children have always been a passion of hers ever since she was a young girl. During her free time she enjoys spending time with family and friends, trying new foods, working out, and relaxing. She is so excited to be a member of this team this summer!
Counselor: Jo Anne Johnson
Jo Anne is very excited to be able to return to Japan. She had the opportunity to live in Japan 9 years of her childhood at Tachikawa, Yokota and Kanta Mura AFB. She comes from a military family of educators who truly love to share their various gifts and talents. She retired after 36 years as an educator. Throughout those years, she was an elementary school teacher, the first art teacher of two elementary schools, a middle school Fine Arts/Art teacher, a Gifted and Talented Facilitator/Coordinator, a National Junior Honor Society Sponsor, a Student Council Accounting Sponsor, Tennis Coach, an Administrative Intern, an Assistant Principal and enjoyed living and working in Hawaii at a private preschool. Most of her life has been in San Antonio but she was born in Selma,Alabama, lived in Homestead AFB, Florida and Birmingham, Alabama. She earned a Bachelors degree from Southwest Texas State University in Elementary Education and Art certified K-8. Her Masters degree in Curriculum & Instruction with Technology from Houston Baptist University an a Principal Certification Pre K-12.
Counselor: Kristine Guevara
Kristine was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas. She will graduate from the University of Texas at Austin in May 2018 with a Bachelor's Degree in History and Minor in Radio-Television-Film. Sheis certified to teach Social Studies Grades 7-12 through the UTeach Liberal Arts program. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time outdoors, visiting museums, and trying new foods. This will be Kristine's first visit to Japan and she is excited to be a part of the Camp Wakaba team!
Counselor: Christina Cardenas
Christina is from San Antonio, Texas. This will be Christina’s second year with Camp Wakaba. She attended the University of Texas at San Antonio, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology. She completed coursework in child & human development, theories of learning and child psychology. She currently works as an instructional assistant for the San Antonio Independent School District. Her hobbies and interests include arts and crafts, photography, traveling, music & dance, cooking, as well as trying new foods.
Counselor: Abigail Ruiz
Abigail was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas. She got her Bachelor’s Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies EC-6, with a focus on Bilingual Education at Texas State University. She is completing her 4th year as a teacher, three years in Kindergarten and currently First Grade. On her free time she enjoys shopping, relaxing, photography, and going out to eat. But during her holiday breaks she enjoys spending time in a small quiet town in Mexico where her family is from. This will be her first time traveling this far away from home. She is very excited about going to Japan and being a part of Camp Wakaba!
Counselor: America Noriega
America is from the Rio Grande Valley, but is currently residing in San Antonio, Texas. She is an instructional assistant at Northwest Crossing Elementary. She is pursuing her Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management and Finance with South Texas College in McAllen, Texas. After she graduates, she plans to open up her own Boxfit/CrossFit gym. She is also working towards her Bilingual Education certification for grades EC-6. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with family and friends, working out, and traveling. This will be America’s first visit to Japan, and she is extremely excited to be a part of the Camp Wakaba team!
Counselor: Holly Horton
Holly was born and raised in San Antonio, TX. She graduated from the University of Texas at San Antonio with a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. Holly began substitute teaching after college and has experience teaching all ages. She also has a certification in Special Education. Holly is currently a 2nd grade collaborative teacher at Northwest Crossing Elementary. In her spare time she enjoys spending time with family and friends. She loves traveling, hiking and outdoor activities around water. Holly will be visiting Japan for the first time this summer.
Counselor: Justin Beebe
Justin was born in Maryland, but grew up in Yokota Air Base, Japan. He is currently pursuing an Accounting degree from the University of Alabama, Huntsville. His favorite things to do are: play video games, talk to friends overseas, and ride his bike. Justin played the baritone saxophone in the school bands for 7 years and still love anything to do with music. He looks forward to a summer full of fun and excitement!
Counselor: Terra Cross
Terra is from San Antonio, Texas and is currently a student at Northwest Vista College pursuing a degree in Biology. She plans to transfer to the Pharmacy Program at the University of Incarnate Word to continue her education. As a military child Terra spent seven years growing up in Japan, and is happy to return back for a third year as a camp counselor for Camp Wakaba. On her free time she enjoys traveling and outdoor activities such as kayaking, hiking, and long boarding. Terra is also a freelance photographer capturing major events, newborn/baby photos, and creative portraits.
Director: Robert Lombrana
Robert is a recent graduate of the University of Texas at San Antonio, where he obtained a Bachelor's degree in Biology with a concentration in integrative biology. Robert currently works as a lab chemist at a automotive research lab. This will be his third year as a camp counselor for Camp Wakaba. In his free time Robert enjoys playing video games, riding his bike, and seeing a good show.
Instructor: Treadway Bucholz
Treadway is a graduate of Warren High School in San Antonio, Texas and is currently studying for his associates in business at Northwest Vista Colleges. His goal is to major in cyber security administration at UTSA. Treadway loves anything to do anything outdoors, his interests include swimming, hiking, and photography. He is excited for his first summer at Camp Wakaba and all the great memories to be made.
