The focus of this semester has been an in-depth study of systems of oppression within society, and what different minority groups face in terms of discrimination, prejudice, and violence. All of this was detailed in the insightful article by Young, titled the “Five Faces of Oppression”, which outlined these types of oppression into specific groups: Violence, Exploitation, Marginalization, Powerlessness, and Cultural Imperialism. All of these are detrimental to minority groups and undermine and threaten their mere existence in specific ways, but the type my group chose to focus on was violence. We were particularly interested in how violence, whether physical or verbal, even coming down to microaggressions in this category, harmed minority groups such as those of minority races or in the LGBTQ+ community. For this podcast, I have decided to branch out from my previous theme of violence against LGBTQ+ individuals, into the semi-related but more specific topic of the risks of so called “Conversion Therapy” many members of this minority group are subjected to, even in the modern age. This podcast is important for parents of LGBTQ+ identifying children, with the hope of educating them on the risks of conversion therapy, as well as how generally unsuccessful and scientifically unfounded it is. Conversion therapy is not a valid medical or psychiatric practice- it is best defined as harmful pseudoscience, a malpractice that's inexplicably still legal.
