All lectures will be held on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. central time on Zoom.
Overview
Our goal is to start from the practical questions and concrete decisions great attacking chess players make througout the game, and move on from there to more general and abstract principles. Attacking, as we like to think of it, is not simply a matter of finding a knock-out blow, but rather an approach to the entire game.
Week 1 (April 6) - The Golden Rule of Attacking, or: How NOT To Attack
So you’ve committed to an attack. Congratulations! How are you going to make sure it’s going to work? We develop a checklist of what to look for in an attack and boil it down to one golden rule. Sign up to find out what it is!
Week 2 (April 13) - Short and Long Term Considerations, or: When To Go All-In
So you’re thinking about attacking. Wow, how exciting! Before you start going wild, what are you looking for on the board to determine whether it’s the right time? You’re not just going to go all-in on a hunch are you? ARE YOU?
Week 3 (April 20) - Opening Theory Relative to Attacking Play, or: Attacking Without Memorizing
So you’re looking to develop an attacking opening repertoire, but you don’t have the time to memorize Giri’s 1000-line course on the Najdorf. How are you supposed to learn how to attack out of the opening without selling your soul to memorization-based opening courses? Sell your soul to Gopal instead. Learn how to treat the opening as a canvas, painting attacks direct from the bowels of your imagination.
Week 4 (April 27) - Building intuition and understanding, or: Learning How To Trust Your Gut
The worst thing ever assumed about chess is that intuition is something that cannot be learned or changed. Just because you weren’t born with Tal’s attacking prowess doesn’t mean you’re doomed to exchange slav drudgery for the rest of your life.
