Hi, I'm Camila Hernandez Flowerman.

I am a postdoctoral fellow in philosophy with the Embedded EthiCS program at Harvard University.  My primary research interests are in the ethics of technology, and social philosophy. In recent work, I attempt to tie concepts from social and political philosophy to applied issues, including climate change, data collection and information technology, and the use of algorithms in public institutions. I received my PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in May 2023; my dissertation was about weakness of political will in collective agents, especially as it concerns their progress (or lack thereof) in addressing the climate crisis.

I love teaching philosophy! I had the opportunity to teach a variety of courses at UW-Madison as a graduate student, including courses in environmental ethics, business ethics, and contemporary moral issues. I also worked as a teaching assistant for one of the first Ethics and Computer Science courses, run through the computer science department. You can see the full list of courses here.

My teaching approach is collaborative; I try to make students feel like they can be active participants in not only class discussions, but also the overall design and direction of the course. I think transparency about course objectives, norms, and assessments is really important in creating a classroom environment where all students feel like their autonomy is respected and their voices are valued.

Outside of philosophy, I play a lot of ultimate frisbee. In 2023 I played pro ultimate with the San Francisco Falcons, and in the past I played for the Milwaukee Monarchs. I will spend the 2024 season out with a torn ACL. I also spend a lot of time hiking and exploring the outdoors!
