CAMELOT is a set of services and products for structural monitoring. It is part of the Earthquake Engineering and Dynamics Laboratory (EEDlab), which is a research laboratory located at the Structural, Geotechnical and Building Engineering (DISEG) department of Polytechnic of Turin (https://www.diseg.polito.it/en/) . We are a group of people which primary goal is finding the signal amidst the noise. We constalty deepening our knowledge on topics such as design of experimental setup and optimal sensor placement, signal analysis, system identification, parameter calibration and model updating of black-box and white-box (linear and nonlinear) models. Our primary focus for more than 20 years is the seismic protection and the structural health monitoring of the built enviroment (e.g., structural damage identification), with particular attention to the modern and ancient built heritage. To do that, we work on both data-driven and model-driven approaches, also contemplating the synergistic use of the both
CAMELOT in brief
CAMELOT provides innovative solutions for monitoring the structural health of buildings and large civil structures/infrastructures through a constant research on: the analysis of dynamic signals (both random noise and seismic signals), algorithm development, machine learning applications, advanced computational models, and guidelines for diagnosis/progniosis of civil structures. Basically, we support technicians and non-technicians that have to take decision actions for structural health asessment and rehabilitation, such as diagnostic tools support doctors. In this case, the patients are large civil structures and infrastructures.
Nothing is designed to last forever, and this is as true for humans as it is for civil structures/infrastructures. The civil structures built in the early 1900s are approaching the end of their design life. However, unlike humans, structures cannot communicate their problems, which become more and more evident and worst with aging. Our vision is to give voice to the built environment so that it can communicate its problems timely, guaranteeing an optimized management of structural interventions and supporting the decision making phases, reducing the risk of potentially disastrous accidents for humans, which would require a close-to-inestimable cost of intervention after disaster.
