Primarily, wool sutures are removed. Maggots and infection are cleaned out using antiseptics in order to kill pathogens. Debridement follows in order to promote wound healing by removal of necrotic tissue. (Prior to suture placement, wound is irrigated with saline solution.) Hand is dressed with sterile gauze to prevent any further bacterial contamination and secondary dressing with adhesive tape is finally applied. Patient needs to be seen in 3-4 days to confirm proper healing and for new dressing. Patient's wife is given explicit instruction on how to properly dress wound post appointment.
Patient explains injury occurred three moons previous. Patient claims to have come across a castle boasting of its violence towards men who had tried previously to save a damsel in distress, stating that the castle was adorned with the armor of those who were killed in the process. Patient states that his emotions forced him to put a stop to the evil acts occurring at this location, and therefore he drew closer to the castle. He then claims to have seen an army of red tents, and a horn hanging from a nearby tree. Said horn was blown in order to gain the attention of the army as well as the damsel in the castle window. Patient then spoke to one called the Red Knight, who had claimed the woman as his own. He then stated that the knight showed no feelings of love towards said woman, and therefore an altercation was prepared for. After many sunrises and sunsets of battle, the patient caught sight of the woman in the window. Female who accompanied the patient (Linet) states to have eagerly awaited his rescue. The fight continued until the opponent's sword slashed across the hand of the patient. Linet claimes to have seen the patient drop his sword and fall off of his horse.
CT scans are ordered at this time to test for neurological complications due to said fall. Patient advocate (rescued female) continues to explain while patient receives CT scan. She explains that she called out to the patient, thus giving him the strength to continue battle. The patient regained control of his horse, picked up his sword in his healthy (left) hand, and prepared to slay the Red Knight who begged for mercy. She states that her capturer was sworn to wage war on the knights of Arthur (unknown) and therefore he would retreat to pardoning if shown mercy. (No charges pressed.) The woman ends the account by claiming to have married the brother of her rescuer before Lady Liones (patient's wife) enters the room. The wife explains that she attempted to clean the wound on the hand (right) by pouring a gallon of ale on it. She then explains how she attempted to close the wound with her personal sewing tools, used previously on dress patchwork. Needle was never sterilized and thread was made of wool. The wound continued to bleed overnight. Within the next two moons, the wound began to seep with yellow/brown infection and produced a foul odor. The skin of the laceration site was said to have changed color (red/purple) and necrosis is now visible. Patient decided to come in due to the sight of small maggots moving throughout the inside of the wound and suture site.
Author's Note: I really enjoyed reading about Sir Gareth and decided that he would be the perfect candidate for my first patient file. Gareth (aka: Beaumains) is one of the most well known characters of the tales of King Arthur, but once I started actually reading some of his stories, I realized that he is much more than just a skillful knight. This specific story not only shows his bravery in regards to helping a woman, but it also shows how he interacted with others around him . My favorite aspect of the story was that it showed an example of a male character saving a female character that he wasn't in love with, or lustful about. In fact, the woman he saved actually ended up marrying Gareth's brother! On top of all of this, I felt that the mercy he showed towards the Red Knight was refreshing and I couldn't help but put a little more emphasis on how Lady Liones helped patch up his wounds. Hopefully the images and text were not overly graphic for the everyday reader, and I hope it was enjoyable! (I would have liked to put a more graphic wound image on the post, but I wanted to make sure the text was the main point of this page as opposed to grossing people out to a point that they no longer had interest reading.)
