PREPARATION OF WOOL/PLANT FIBRE WARPS AND SKEINS FOR DYEING
meeting FUN DYE night:
We are going to dye yarn/fibre of your choice.
Each person will bring with them 100gram warps or skeins or fibre for dyeing.
We will be using “ACID” dyes which will dye wool, silk, nylon yarn/fibre.
The wool/fibres all need to be well WASHED PRIOR to ensure that the dyestuff will adhere to the materials, also factory processed yarns have spinning residues in them.
Bring with you your washed, dampened skein/fibre. Fibres need to be in a bag or mesh to contain.
Also bring with you a pair or two of plastic gloves to protect your hands. Wear protective clothing.
Bring with you some ZIP LOCK BAGGIES to take your dyed stuff home safely.
Bring some colour samples you might like to work with, i.e. photos, swatches, etc.
We will paint the warps, or skeins, dip fibre.
We will then wrap the stuff up in saran/cling wrap and these will be steamed by yourself on going home. Or at the meeting if time allows, microwaved.
SELF-STRIPING SKEIN: 100 Grams sufficient for pair socks. Wind a 40’ skein, using a warping board, or mill, or clamps, to make a complete circle. Each thread to be singly wound not doubled up. Tie off with figure eight ties at regular intervals about 60-80”apart. Do not use a yarn for ties that will bleed in the dyes i.e. red/dark blue.
WARP CHAIN FOR WEAVING: 100 Grams of wool, tencel or silk is enough for 1 scarf warp.
Aim for 7-1/2” wide x 108” long. Make a cross and tie these off, loosely, then tie at intervals down skein with figure eight ties before chaining.
WEAR OLD CLOTHES AND APRONS. DONT FORGET THE GLOVES!
from 10 am to 2 ish. Email for location at member's home and what to bring and how to prepare your fibre.
Dye day is Saturday, August 16 from 10-2.
You may bring 100 gm of wool, fleece silk etc. (a protein fibre).
There will be 4 dye pots, so consider how you may want to break up (or not) your 100 gm. Bring it washed but only damp. Mordant will be in the dye pots.
Bring your lunch, a chair, bug spray, sunscreen, hat, gloves, apron and pails or baggies to carry your dyed fibre home.
Something for the table would be appreciated.
Hosts are providing coffee and tea.
LET the hosts KNOW THIS WEEKEND IF YOU PLAN TO ATTEND, SO THE DYE POT VOLUMES CAN BE DETERMINED.

Laura is the shepherdess at Twin Oaks Farm. The family-owned farm is just outside of Guelph Ontario where they raise sheep, beef cows, horses, and chickens. She began knitting about 10 years ago and dabbles in spinning and natural dyeing. The original flock of Romney sheep was purchased in 2016. Since then, BFL and some Finn and Cotswold have been added in. The sheep are raised mainly for fibre and the fleeces yield a long stapled, soft, well crimped fibre. Twin Oaks Farm is committed to providing excellent animal welfare by ensuring our sheep are healthy, comfortable, well nourished, safe, and able to express innate behavior. All of the yarns are non-super wash. All of the fiber is grown locally on our farm or our neighbours. All our products are milled and made in Canada.

Megan will show us how to do needlefelting. Depending on interest, we might do a workshop.
Come and be inspired.
Lorraine is going to talk about koolaid dyeing a warp using multi colours, and I am going to make a silk warp and demonstrate how to tie the warp Ikat fashion. I have a microwave for dying and we will bring relevant dyes, put the warps in dyes and microwave the skeins. Undo the ties and voila! I had thought we could make an Ikat tied weft, but we won’t have enough time. We can talk about it, because it is the same technique basically.
Join and have fun!
We will be meeting on the 3rd Monday of month, from 6:45 pm to 9 pm
Location :Cambridge Arts Centre, 60 Dickson St, Cambridge, ON N1R 8N1
Hints to find us:
The correct address for Cambridge Arts Centre is 60 Dickson, right next to the Durwood Senior’s Centre. Instructions on the web site say to enter the Art’s Centre thru the Durwood. But the Durwood is closed in the evening. So we have to enter from the back parking lot.
Putting 12 Cambridge St. Into your GPS will bring you to the end of Cambridge St. with the parking lot on your left and City Hall dead ahead. There is a sign on the back corner of City Hall with an arrow leading under the cement bridge that connects city hall to the Art.’s Centre. The entrance is well lit and a lady at the desk inside will tell you how to get to the multimedia room.
The location is the South Dumfries historical society in the Memorial hall, main floor, 34 Main St. S, St. George, next to the museum. Time 9:30 am to 12:00 pm. You can park across from the post office and walk across the road.
