As alehouse-going philosophers, we naturally like pubs and Cambridge has a lot of good pubs to choose from. Here are some our favourites.
Cambridge Blue, 23 Gwydir Street, CB1 2LG
Lots of rowing paraphernalia on the walls, excellent selection of German and Belgian beers, as well as British ales. Nice beer garden for those Summer evenings.
Devonshire Arms, 1 Devonshire Road, CB1 2BH
Owned by the Milton Brewery and serving their excellent beers. Spartan, classic pub interior. Very popular.
The Empress, 72 Thoday Street, CB1 3AX
Friendly local pub with very varied clientèle. Features retro 80's gaming machine and a reputation for very lively Yuletide decor.
The Free Press, 7 Prospect Row, CB1 1DU
Quaint pub right in the middle of the city. Good beer and good food. Where the group started.
Geldart, 1 Ainsworth Street, CB1 2PF
Slightly trendy place, with a great selection of whiskies and very good food.
Kingston Arms, 33 Kingston Street, CB1 2NU
Local pub with a good selection of ales and reputedly a good Sunday roast.
Live and Let Live, 40 Mawson Road, CB1 2EA
A nice woody pub with the best kept beer in Cambridge and a special line in exotic rums.
Salisbury Arms, 76 Tenison Road, CB1 2DW
A pub with many curious artefacts hanging from walls and roof. Slightly tortured industrial look these days, in keeping with current pub fashions.
Six Bells, 11 Covent Garden, CB1 2HS
A wood-panelled pub with it's own living room and pool room. Usually quiet, and has the additional advantage of being open until 11.30 pm during the week.
