Calvin's Main Motivational Pattern:
Calvin has developed a performance-avoidance approach due to being compared with his peers. Of course, there are times where Calvin exhibits characteristics of the orientations and those have been noted on the corresponding pages. Calvin has developed a performance-avoidance approach due to being compared with his peers; he is always singled out and embarrassed. He has found that acting out is the only way to get Ms. Wormwood to pay attention to him. He does not have an encouraging learning environment and is unmotivated to participate because of this.
Calvin is altogether disinterested in anything related to school.
Calvin does not see the point in trying.
He routinely does not do well on schoolwork.
He often questions his teacher to understand why his learning benefits him.
He does like to learn but really cares about information he is already interested in (EX: Dinosaurs)
In the comic strip below, we see Calvin try to gain understanding of the point around what they are learning but Ms. Wormwood dismisses his. This could be embarrassing and humiliating to a students, and often the fear of embarrassment and failure leads students to be come performance avoidance learners. There is more information below on how Ms. Wormwood should foster more positive learning habits in not only Calvin, but her classroom altogether.
Why Calvin has this pattern:
To be content with his failure.
Embarrassment encourages Calvin to keep the performance-avoidance pattern so that he does not have to be further embarrassed.
There is no one in the classroom who is willing to help lead Calvin toward the right answers, he is made fun of and kicked out of the classroom for his behavior.
He often procrastinates or simply does not try because he would rather not try and have an excuse for his failure
He is not receiving enough help or positive attention in the classroom to be willing to make an effort toward his work.
He knows that no one is there to support him and that influences him to have low motivation for schoolwork.
How Ms. Wormwood can foster more positive motivation patterns in Calvin?
Calvin needs an environment where he feels heard and understood, so Ms.Wormwood should start by showing respect and effort toward him.
Providing positive feedback when Calvin does well on an assignment or in class can motivate and encourage desired behavior.
Recognizing Calvin is the overall goal that Ms.Wormwood should strive for and is something she can do every day.
Positive classroom management: instead of kicking Calvin out-she could use other means of correcting behavior.
