Our club, NSBE, is advised and supported by Cal Poly's Multicultural Engineering Program (MEP). Our club advisor is Dr. Michael Whitt. Aside from advising, he bridges NSBE and MEP together by notifying us of programs, workshops, scholarships, etc. that may help us excel academically as students or succeed professionally as a club. Feel free to schedule a meeting with him as he is a valuable resource. MEP is located in Building 40 and they conveniently offer a computer lab and 24-hour study room!

Biography: Dr. Whitt’s educational background includes a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from Purdue University, a Master of Science and Doctorate of Philosophy in Biomedical Engineering from Rutgers University/University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UNDNJ), and a Masters in Business Administration from the UCLA Anderson School of Management. While at Rutgers/UMDNJ, Dr. Whitt focused his studies in the areas of biomechanics and biomaterials while simultaneously performing research in the areas of medical instrumentation and hemodynamics. Dr. Whitt is a patent holder of five medical device patents and developed a successful product development course as part of the Burton D. Morgan Certificate of Entrepreneurship while at Purdue University. He also worked with the Engineering, Science and Technology Entrepreneurship Excellence Program (ESTEEM) at the University of Notre Dame. He has carried the importance of product development into his involvements with Miami Dade College in the development of a Bachelors Degree and with the non-profit organizations Center for Leadership Development (Indianapolis, IN) and Academy of Business Leadership (Rosemead, CA), while helping to facilitate the success of each group’s mission to ‘foster the advancement of minority youth’ and ‘inspire, educate, and expand the educational and career goals of mostly high-potential, low-opportunity students.' Dr. Whitt is the 2008 Center for Leadership Development Achievement in Science and Technical Disciplines Award Recipient.
The Black Academic Excellence Center (BAEC) program, commonly pronounced "Base," is committed to supporting the advancement and excellence of Black students within the Cal Poly community. By fostering an inclusive environment, providing academic support, and promoting a positive self-image, their mission is to increase the retention and graduation rates of Black students on campus. BAEC has study space, lounging space, computers, and printers. BAEC is located in Building 15, Rooms 103 and 104 so feel free to stop by as NSBE members are always in there!

Biography: Kyle, a proud Bay Area native, is a dedicated advocate for underrepresented and marginalized communities, particularly those within the Black Diaspora. As a prominent member of generational Black excellence in academia, his pursuit of academic success is deeply rooted in his unwavering commitment to social justice, inclusion, and the empowerment of historically marginalized groups. Kyle currently serves as a key leader within the Cal Poly community through his work with the Black Achievement Excellence Center (BAEC), where he creates an inclusive environment for students in the Black Diaspora, fostering academic, professional, and personal growth. Through intentional programming, networking, and scholarship support, Kyle ensures students of color have the resources and mentorship to thrive. He also facilitates workshops on leadership development, academic success, and fostering a sense of belonging. Prior to Cal Poly, Kyle worked as an Assistant Program Coordinator at Youth Community Developers in San Francisco, where he designed programs empowering underserved youth and families. His passion for community development also led him to contribute to various Bay Area initiatives, promoting Black creativity, entrepreneurship, and cultural expression through collaborative events and workshops. Kyle’s impact is not only evident in his professional work, but also in the ways he connects with others, empowering students and community members to advocate for themselves and create lasting change. With a clear vision for an inclusive and diverse future, Kyle is committed to using his skills and passion to continue advocating for equity, access, and opportunity in academia and beyond.
